Struggling to understand a bishop's murder in Turkey

Anyone with even a passing familiarity with Catholicism in the Middle East probably knew Bishop Luigi Padovese, an Italian Capuchin who served as the Vicar of Anatolia and president of the bishops' conference in Turkey. Gregarious and articulate, Padovese was a passionate advocate of the church's mission in the region. In terms of the Christian/Muslim relationship, Padovese was also one of those rare voices not easily classified as either a hawk or a dove - hardly blind to the threats posed by Islamic radicalism, but still a man of dialogue through and through. Given that reputation, news last week that Padovese, 63, had been murdered by his longtime driver and aide in his summer residence outside Iskenderun, on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, triggered shock waves across the Catholic world...

Wellington, June 3 NZPA - The death of a man in the Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn overnight does not appear to be suspicious. Manamana Heti, also known as Stephen Heti, was found dead by ambulance staff at his home in the Catholic Cook Island Centre in the suburb of Grey Lynn shortly before 11pm yesterday. In a statement tonight, police said a post mortem had been completed and his death did not appear to be suspicious.

Students and staff safe after college fire (full text) (27 May 2010)
Early this morning there was a fire in a Hato Paora College dormitory. No staff or students were harmed. The fire began at about 4.50am. Students evacuated, going to the college's gymnasium until 7am. It appears the fire was caused by a water cylinder exploding. While the damage is extensive, it is contained to one dormitory.
Acting Principal Debi Marshall-Lobb is pleased with how the students responded to the fire and grateful to the staff for their assistance. "I will be eternally grateful that all students and staff are safe. Buildings can be replaced but people can't," she says.

At first blush, most people probably assume that the sexual abuse crisis will result in tighter control from Rome over local bishops. The logic is impeccable: The failure of some bishops to do the right thing is a core element of the crisis, and only the pope can really hold bishops accountable. Yet at the moment, the ecclesiological fallout from the crisis, especially in the United States, seems to cut in the opposite direction -- promoting the autonomy of individual bishops and of the bishops' conference, if not so much theologically and canonically, then psychologically and culturally...

The logic is impeccable: The failure of some bishops to do the right thing is a core element of the crisis, and only the pope can really hold bishops accountable. Yet at the moment, the ecclesiological fallout from the crisis, especially in the United States, seems to cut in the opposite direction -- promoting the autonomy of individual bishops and of the bishops' conference, if not so much theologically and canonically, then psychologically and culturally...

As fate would have it, Pope Benedict XVI's five foreign trips in 2010 are almost laid out in ascending order of difficulty. Last month's weekend stop in Malta, arguably the most Catholic society on earth, amounted to the warm-up act, while next week's four-day swing in Portugal, which so far has been spared the sexual abuse scandals which have engulfed the church elsewhere in Europe, should be a fairly smooth ride as well...
