If there’s one thing even the most religiously illiterate person tends to get about the Catholic church, it’s the difference between a cardinal and everybody else. Cardinals matter: they set a leadership tone, and, of course, they elect the next pope. The news this week that Benedict XVI has named 24 new cardinals, including 20 who are under 80 and hence eligible to vote in a conclave, merits a few reflections...

In the middle of Arrowtown, up a gentle rise away from the shops and meandering tourists, sits a small, yellow stucco building, not quite dwarfed by the adjacent St Patrick's Catholic Church. To pass beyond its bright green door is to enter a humble space book-ended by a colourful statue of Jesus and a life-size mannequin of Mary MacKillop. Yet perhaps more significant to this story is a small metal bell; slightly corroded and seemingly well worn, it sits on a window ledge along with a small note explaining its purpose: "Ring -hourly during recreation to remind sisters to offer prayer and work to God."

Mary, born and raised in Australia, was a co-founder of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart and spent approximately four years of her religious life in New Zealand. She encountered major obstacles along the way, but responded to them with charity and humility. In a special episode of Catechiwi, Sr Ann Neven, RSJ, speaks with Gavin Abraham on Mary MacKillop's life and legacy just days before the canonisation. A Victorian-era classroom session, historic walks, a pipe band procession and a special Mass are plans for the Arrowtown celebration of Australasia's first saint. Blessed Mary MacKillop, who died in 1909, aged 67, founded the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart, an order committed to helping the needy in rural areas, which spread from Australia to New Zealand and around the world. Mother Mary was beatified by the late Pope John Paul II in 1995 and will be canonised in the Vatican on October 17.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen, Jr.

http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic

Two weeks' worth of hope
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/two-weeks-worth-hope

When I'm on the lecture circuit, one of the most common questions I get is this: "Where do you see hope in the church?" Implicit, of course, is the assumption that hope is hard to find. The premise is understandable, because the case for despair is often depressingly easy to make. Yet I also can't help feeling that one has to be almost deliberately blind not to see signs of hope everywhere, if you but look around...

Pope’s visit, week’s stories show divisions, rays of hope
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/pope%E2%80%99s-visit-week%E2%80%99s-stories-show-divisions-rays-hope

Three important stories washed across the Catholic radar screen this week, each with something to say about where things stand vis-à-vis the church in the early 21st century. Taken together, these three developments confirm that the Catholic church is beset by important challenges, both from within and without, but also suggest that it may possess some surprising residual strength...

Benedict in Britain: We get it, we've got it, let's share it
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/benedict-britain-we-get-it-weve-got-it-lets-share-it

Pope Benedict XVI is midway through his trip to the United Kingdom, and so far reaction has been all over the map, from wild enthusiasm among devotees, to overt hostility among determined protestors, to benign indifference in a broad swath of secular society. Of course, the pope always evokes a range of opinions, but they’re rarely on full public view as they are here...
