Abortion ruling a step backwards, say New Zealand Catholic Bishops (2 June 2011) (full text)

The New Zealand Catholic bishops are very disappointed at the Court of Appeal decision which upheld a High Court ruling that unborn children do not have a right to life. The decision comes about after pro life group Right to Life appealed a 2008 ruling by Justice Miller that the right to life does not extend to foetuses. Spokesperson for the Catholic bishops, Fr Michael McCabe, says it is a very sad day for the unborn children in our community. “The right to life is fundamental and is the foundation of any just and moral society,” said Fr McCabe. “Every year more than 17,000 young New Zealanders die because we do not accord them this right.” “People on both sides of the abortion debate agree that there is an urgent need to reduce the number of abortions. This latest legal decision is a step backwards in finding common ground for the good of the unborn and their parents”.

A funny thing has happened as the story of a recent Vatican crackdown on a legendary monastery in Rome has made its way into the English-language press. I mean that literally -- the story has been turned into a joke, thereby obscuring its real significance. For those with eyes to see, the suppression of the Cistercian abbey at the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, one of the traditional seven major pilgrimage sites in Rome, rates far more than placement in a "news of the weird" column. Instead, it's the latest chapter in what might be called a "Quiet Revolution" under Pope Benedict XVI, referring to a reform in clerical culture beginning in Rome and radiating beyond...

In particular, it's important to know - and many people may not be aware of this - that when people talk about 'the Rapture', they are not referring to the Second Coming of Christ, a doctrine shared by all the principal Christian denominations, but to something else entirely - Mike L.

New Zealand Catholic Church says it will not have to change its policies (full text)
Radio New Zealand Newswire — 17 May 2011 : 14:07:33
The Catholic Church in New Zealand says it will not have to change its policies following a letter from the Vatican telling bishops around the world to report abuse by clergy to the police. The letter says bishops should report the abuse of children by priests directly to the authorities in line with their local law. The New Zealand church's director for Professional Standards, John Jamieson, says the letter deals with offending against people aged under 18, who make a complaint within 20 years. He says the church would take that sort of case to the police immediately, but in the last 30 years it has only had reports of historical abuse. Mr Jamieson says he has dealt with many cases where the offender has died. He says he personally revised the guidelines for the church in New Zealand, so if a current case was reported, it would be handled well.

Doomsday hour arrives: world survives
http://www.odt.co.nz/news/national/161521/doomsday-hour-arrives-world-survives
The prediction of an American religious leader who declared Judgement Day would arrive first in New Zealand at 6pm today has been proved less than accurate. Evangelical broadcaster Harold Camping has predicted a massive earthquake will strike the earth, unleashing the Apocalypse, first upon New Zealand, then around the world.

And that's the end of the world news :-)

Four titles from a bumper crop of Italian books
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/four-titles-bumper-crop-italian-books

On a per capita basis, Italy probably churns out more books on the Catholic church each year than anyplace else on earth. Given the boost created by the May 1 beatification of Pope John Paul II, this spring has been an especially busy period for the Italian market, generating several titles that will likely make their way into translations and shape Catholic conversation around the world. This week, I’ll offer brief sketches of four such titles to emerge from the recent bumper crop...

A triptych on Benedict’s papacy, and hints of what lies beyond
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/triptych-benedict%E2%80%99s-papacy-and-hints-what-lies-beyond

Three Vatican stories which unfolded during the past week, taken together, form a sort of triptych. They’re like three scenes in a single work of art, illustrating different features of the same subject. Those stories were: A shake-up in the Roman Curia ... A May 7-8 papal trip to Venice ... A May 7 retrospective on John Paul II in Spoleto. I’ll sketch these panels in turn, because each tells us something interesting about the papacy of Benedict XVI -- and each, perhaps, may offer just a hint or two about what might lie beyond...
