LENT 2012

http://www.caritas.org.nz/take-action/events/lent-2012

Lent 2012 began on Ash Wednesday 22 February and ends with Easter on 8 April. Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand's theme for Lent 2012 is "Called by faith to act with generous hearts". This theme was inspired by the words of Pope Benedict XVI addressed to the Caritas Internationalis General Assembly for 2011.

The Lenten theme is being promoted in schools as "Hearts filled with hope" – recognising that good people everywhere have hopeful hearts. Our schools resource was sent to all Catholic schools in early December and is also downloadable from the Website. Parish Lenten resources are available from the same page and visitors may donate to the Caritas Lent Appeal there.

Papal Transition, Obama, Nigeria and China
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/papal-transition-obama-nigeria-and-china

There's also a mounting perception that for all of Benedict's brilliance as a teacher, something isn't working in the internal governance of the Vatican. With this perceived crisis of competence in the background, two prominent voices in Italy have, in effect, declared the informal papal transition season to be open ...

February 28, 2012: In the second episode of 'The View from Down Here', Brendan, Tim and Gavin revisit the Republican primary contest and, in particular, look at Ron Paul, the congressman from Texas. Is he being ignored by the media? Does he have a chance to win the nomination? Can — and should — Catholic voters support him? We look at a pundit's view of that, and also deconstruct an opponent of Rick Santorum who tries to portray the former Pennsylvania senator as not a very good Catholic. Finally, we look at the way atheists are fighting for their rights to not be offended by such outrageous words as "Amen" and "prayer".

LENT 2012

http://www.caritas.org.nz/take-action/events/lent-2012

Lent 2012 begins on Ash Wednesday 22 February and ends with Easter on 8 April.

The spire of St Anne's Catholic Church in Woolston is removed yesterday after it was deemed an earthquake danger. The church has been off limits since January 24, when engineers determined the entire building was earthquake-prone and required urgent strengthening. Priest Dan Doyle had been due to give his first sermon at the church on January 25, but has instead held services in the nearby St Anne's School. ''It was an incredible shock,'' he said.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

Is it time for a Jacobin pope? Plus, musings on an American
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/it-time-jacobin-pope-plus-musings-american

As a thought exercise, ask yourself what period of time the following paragraph about the Vatican seems to reflect: "For those who've seen the place in better days, the Vatican looks deeply troubled. In the absence of strong leadership, internal tensions seem to be bursting into view. Even at the height of his powers, the pope took scant interest in governance. As he ages and becomes more limited, a sense of drift is mounting -- a conviction that hard choices must await a new day, and probably a new pontiff" ...

The Vatican gets religion on fighting abuse
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/vatican-gets-religion-fighting-abuse

I've been covering the "Toward Healing and Renewal" symposium this week, a major international summit on the sexual abuse crisis organized by Rome's Jesuit-run Gregorian University and co-sponsored by several Vatican departments. It brought together roughly 100 bishops and religious superiors from around the world ahead of a May deadline from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith for bishops' conferences to submit their anti-abuse policies for review. I've been filing stories along the way, and I won't rehash that material here. Instead, I'll lay out the big picture to emerge from the summit, which I would express this way: The Vatican has gotten religion on the sexual abuse crisis...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic

A make-or-break moment on sex abuse and more Vatican news
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/make-or-break-moment-sex-abuse-and-more-vatican-news

In a polarized world, it was probably inevitable that opinion on the Catholic sex abuse crisis, like pretty much everything else, would crystallize into two opposing blocs... Yet there is also a third constituency ... Composed mostly of Catholic insiders, these are people who grasp the church's failures and who regard recovery very much as a work in progress, but who also believe the church has made important strides and could become a social pacesetter in anti-abuse efforts. Next week in Rome, this "Get Something Done" camp may finally have its day in the sun...
