Church Leaders Unite to Speak up on Marriage Amendment Bill
Seventy church leaders, including numerous national heads of major church denominations both Catholic and Protestant, are speaking up in a joint personal statement on the day of the first reading of the Marriage Amendment Bill, which would allow same-sex couples to marry ...

Richard Stanton: Marriage not a right (photo)
I oppose the proposal to change the definition of marriage to include same sex couples for religious and educational reasons.

Views divided on marriage equality bill ahead of vote
Wedding bells could be one step closer to ringing for gay couples from tomorrow, but church bells will not be chiming in unison.

Gay marriage 'unlikely' in the Catholic church
If it becomes legal for gay couples to marry, that's never likely happen in the Catholic church says Ashburton priest Father Geoff Gray.

Local priest rejects gay marriages
A prominent Timaru priest has said he could never marry a gay couple. Sacred Heart Basilica parish priest Father Peter Costello was reacting to the news that Louisa Wall's Marriage Amendment Bill had passed its first reading in Parliament.

Island Bay childcare centre may get reprieve

Lament, Hope, Action: Christian Environmental Conference in October focuses on creation care
How does 'care for creation' become incorporated into the shared life of the Church, and into our everyday lives? How can our worship, our prayer, and our mission, demonstrate God's love for the whole of creation? How do we encourage and enable others to live sustainably?

Organist set to go solo (photo)
On February 22 last year Josh Anderson, now 20, was in the Durham St Methodist church helping his South Island Organ Co colleagues dismantle an organ. While standing on scaffolding inside the building, the 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit, bringing down the church and trapping Josh and his co-workers. Eighteen months on from the moment which he describes as the scariest of his life, Josh is preparing for his first solo organ concert in his home town, the first of three performances at the Sacred Heart Basilica in September.

Film-makers explore rural river community (photo)
Film-makers Christopher Pryor and Miriam Smith did not do things by halves for their feature documentary How Far is Heaven. Driving in and out each day from the isolated Jerusalem community on the Whanganui River for stints of filming wasn't an option. Instead, the two moved in and lived and breathed Jerusalem for a year.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

Super Mario and the pope, a quarterback controversy, and coming attractions

On Monday, Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti met Benedict XVI at the pope's retreat in Castel Gandolfo, signifying the end of the summer doldrums. A brief Vatican statement said the exchange focused on the "European situation," understood to mean the Eurozone's massive debt crisis, high unemployment and generally dismal economic outlook. It was the fifth such encounter since Monti was tapped to lead a technocratic government in November 2011, underscoring the positive vibe between "Super Mario" and the pope...

NZ CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

'From the beginning of creation' (19 Aug 2012)

A Pastoral Letter from the Catholic Bishops of New Zealand to young New Zealanders

Dear Kiwis of Generation Y

As the people who entered adulthood in this millennium you are being wooed by politicians and advertisers. Your choices will help shape our nation. One such choice is the present legislation about amending the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples. The lobby that promoted and achieved the Civil Unions bill now say that this does not go far enough...

Taking its medicine does the Vatican some good

"Be careful what you wish for," as the saying goes, "because you will surely get it." In light of a couple of recent Vatican stories, the corollary also seems to apply: Be careful what you try to avoid, because it might actually be good for you. A stringent European money laundering exam in July and a federal court ruling in Oregon this week both make the point...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

The church's deep pockets, the butler did it, and myths about atheism

Most people believe the real power in Catholicism resides with the hierarchy, and in terms of both theology and church law, that's basically right. For instance, canon law says the pope wields "supreme, full, immediate and universal" authority, and it's tough to get more sweeping than that. One wonders, however, if an accountant would reach the same conclusion...

Radio NZ. Spiritual Outlook, Sunday, 5 August 2012: How Far is Heaven
How Far is Heaven is a New Zealand documentary that looks at a small community in the remote village of Hiruharama (Jerusalem) which sits nestled alongside the Whanganui River. It was the very location that Suzanne Aubert established The Sisters of Compassion more than 100 years ago. Today there are Sisters living in the area, and this documentary looks to explore the relevance of the Sisters presence in the predominantly Maori Community.
Directors Miriam Smith and Christopher Pryor speak to Sonia Sly about their experience in the isolated community where they spent a year filming.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

'Surprising support' and the future of the center-left

Ideological labels for the church are notoriously ill-fitting, but if we're going to use them, I prefer the European taxonomy of "left, center-left, center-right, and right" to the American convention of "liberals, moderates and conservatives." In my experience, most self-described moderates actually lean one way or the other, but their defining trait is a preference for consensus. Applying the European frame to American Catholicism these days, you have to feel a little sorry for the center-left, meaning Catholics whose instincts run to the liberal side but who still believe in working within the system...

Bishop opposes abortion clinic (photo)
The Roman Catholic Bishop of Dunedin, Colin Campbell, is urging his flock to oppose a new abortion clinic in Invercargill, saying Catholics "must do all we can to prevent this culture of death spreading in our country". In a letter to be read to more than 8000 parishioners at services in the Otago-Southland diocese tomorrow, Bishop Campbell said the pleas of concerned Southlanders opposed to the Southland District Health Board's plans to establish abortion services at Southland Hospital had gone unheeded...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

Vatican and LCWR, a fired archbishop and getting Boko Haram right

An old Roman quip holds that the only things moving during August are cani e americani, meaning dogs and Americans. It expresses the city's somnambulant ethos during the traditional ferragosto hiatus as natives head for the hills or the beaches. The summer lull affords a chance to catch up on recent stories that haven't gotten quite the attention they deserve...

Gay marriage is set to be debated by Parliament as early as next month, after a bill to allow same sex couples to marry was drawn from the members' ballot: a discussion between Rev Glynn Cardy, the vicar of St Matthew-in-the-City, Auckland, and Fr Merv Duffy, Dean of Studies at Good Shepherd Theological College, Auckland.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

Pope Benedict's apolitical line on the Middle East, and Christians in Syria

Pope Benedict XVI will travel to Lebanon on Sept. 14-16, marking his first visit to the Middle East since the Arab Spring and his fourth overall to the region. The official purpose is to present the conclusions from the Vatican's Synod on the Middle East in October 2010. Lebanon is an obvious launching pad, since Christians make up roughly 40 percent of the country's total population of 4 million, the largest Christian footprint in percentage terms in the Middle East. It's also, of course, one of the few places in the region where the pope's safety can be reasonably assured...
