FROM THE SECULAR PRESS

Vatican II showed power, wisdom
Fifty years ago today, on October 11, 1962, Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council of the Catholic Church. Father John O'Connor looks back on the half century since the Council...

For synod members, media part of the problem, part of the solution
Archbishop John A. Dew of Wellington, New Zealand, told [the Synod of Bishops on the New Evangelisation] that even the secular media have helped Catholic evangelization through the attention they have given the declaration of saints from the region.

Becoming fonder of biography (photo)
Retired Catholic Bishop of Dunedin Len Boyle is growing fonder of his biography, published earlier this year. A humble man, he had brushed aside calls through the years to write an autobiography and initially resisted when it was suggested a writer work with him on a biography. Others, such as his friend and neighbour Bill Brown, persisted, insisting he had a story worth sharing...

Street history: Hawker St (Wellington)
St Gerard's church and monastery are Hawker St's crowning glory. The concrete and brick church was built in 1908 for the Catholic Redemptorists, and the three- storeyed monastery followed in 1932. Funds were raised by public subscription, though it was at the height of the Depression...

Paul Delaney a humble one-man-band (photo)
Paul Delaney lived his life as a humble one-man-band plumber but in July 1965 he was part of Wellington rugby's finest-ever victory.

Great Riverton man gave his all (photo)
The Southland Times
Many Riverton mourners could have been excused for wondering if a part of their seaside settlement itself had died when one of its long-standing identities, Tom White, died last month, aged 95.

Churches' future still uncertain
Work on identifying the earthquake repairs required to the Temuka and Pleasant Point Catholic churches is ongoing, but there is still no indication of when the churches might reopen.

Old cemetery becomes dumping ground (Video report. Link to the right of the photo)
An old Roman Catholic cemetery in Otahuhu, South Auckland, has become a dumping ground for 900 cubic metres of dirt and rubbish, after efforts to fill in a gully went horribly wrong.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

An Asian plea for humility at the Synod of Bishops

Anybody who's seen the movie "Pulp Fiction" probably recalls the scene where John Travolta explains to Samuel L. Jackson that in France, McDonald's calls the quarter-pounder a "Royale with cheese" because the French wouldn't know what a quarter-pounder is. There's a missionary insight here: Whether we're talking about cheeseburgers or eternal salvation, the same product often has to be packaged in different ways for different audiences based on the languages they speak and the cultural worlds they inhabit. That, believe it or not, is a way of introducing a report from the Oct. 7-28 Synod of Bishops in Rome on the new evangelization...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

Q&A on the synod for new evangelization

The 25th Synod of Bishops begins Sunday, this one dedicated to "The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith." In all honesty, at least from a media point of view, it's not even the biggest Vatican event happening right now. That distinction belongs to the trial of Paolo Gabriele, the former papal butler. Yet the synod is nonetheless worth tracking, especially given the theme. Here are three good reasons why ...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

Christian growth in the heart of Islam; Kazakhstan; and the butler's trial

Media theorists like to talk about the power of a "narrative," meaning a storyline that's often more influential than reality in shaping perceptions. Pope Benedict XVI recently returned from his fourth trip to the Middle East, where there's a strong Christian narrative these days: decline and possible extinction. Given the steep drop in the native Christian population, some fear the region will soon be a "spiritual Disneyland," full of holy sites but empty of flesh-and-blood believers. There's certainly reality to that, yet the narrative of decline obscures an equally important truth. In some parts of the Middle East, Christianity is actually booming, and those folks deserve some attention, too...

They end with the story that went around the world — the fresco fiasco. Thanks for listening and we'd love to get your feedback.

In Lebanon, pope mixes bitter and sweet

In advance, Benedict XVI's three-day trip to Lebanon shaped up as a balancing act, both reaching out and pushing back -- that is, extending an olive branch to the Muslim majority of both Lebanon and the entire Middle East, while at the same time defending its beleaguered Christian minority and rejecting the radical currents in Islam which exploded anew this week with violence in Egypt, Libya and elsewhere. Day one of the trip didn't disappoint, with Benedict offering a mixture of the bitter and the sweet ...

NZ CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

"The struggle to put food on the table" the focus of Catholic Church's Social Justice Week (7 September 2012)

New Zealand's Catholic Bishops are drawing attention to the increasing struggle of many New Zealand households to put nutritious food on the table, in a statement The Hunger in our Midst released for Social Justice Week (9-15 September)...

Catholic Church focuses on food security for Social Justice Week
Passing on extra vegetables grown in the garden to people in need, and sharing what food we have, were suggestions that students at St Teresa's School in Karori gave today to help overcome hunger and food insecurity in New Zealand. The students were talking to Catholic Archbishop of Wellington John Dew over lunch, prior to the Catholic Church's Social Justice Week focus on food security. Social Justice Week 2012 runs 9-15 September, and is an opportunity for Catholics and the wider community to consider a current issue in the light of Catholic social teaching.

Historic super-cathedral plan
Rebuilding Christchurch's two wounded cathedrals into one 'unprecedented' Anglican-Catholic super-cathedral is under discussion at top levels in the Anglican Church. The Sunday Star-Times understands the possibility of an ecumenical, or joint, cathedral to unify the two churches has been discussed behind closed doors for months.

Futuna's Jesus sculpture returned (photo)
Jesus finally returned home from the dead today, briefly stopping in Karori under a heavy police escort. The historic mahogany statue of Christ, hand-forged by sculptor Jim Allen, went missing from Karori's Futuna Chapel in 1999 or 2000 around the time the chapel was sold by its former owners, the Society of Mary, to housing developers.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

Playing politics with the global war on Christians

Most people, most of the time, are fundamentally decent. Hence if they knew that there's a minority facing an epidemic of persecution -- a staggering total of 150,000 martyrs every year, meaning 17 deaths every hour -- there would almost certainly be a groundswell of moral and political outrage. There is such a minority in the world today, and it's Christianity. The fact that there isn't yet a broad-based movement to fight anti-Christian persecution suggests something is missing in public understanding...

Wedding bells could be one step closer to ringing for gay couples from tomorrow, but church bells will not be chiming in unison.

Gay marriage 'unlikely' in the Catholic church
If it becomes legal for gay couples to marry, that's never likely happen in the Catholic church says Ashburton priest Father Geoff Gray.

Local priest rejects gay marriages
A prominent Timaru priest has said he could never marry a gay couple. Sacred Heart Basilica parish priest Father Peter Costello was reacting to the news that Louisa Wall's Marriage Amendment Bill had passed its first reading in Parliament.

Super Mario and the pope, a quarterback controversy, and coming attractions

On Monday, Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti met Benedict XVI at the pope's retreat in Castel Gandolfo, signifying the end of the summer doldrums. A brief Vatican statement said the exchange focused on the "European situation," understood to mean the Eurozone's massive debt crisis, high unemployment and generally dismal economic outlook. It was the fifth such encounter since Monti was tapped to lead a technocratic government in November 2011, underscoring the positive vibe between "Super Mario" and the pope...
