Archbishop Moxon to become Anglican ambassador to Rome
Archbishop David Moxon is heading to Rome as the Anglican Communion's chief representative to the Roman Catholic Church. This means he will step down in April as the Archbishop of the New Zealand dioceses, and thus as one of the three leaders of the Anglican Church in these islands. He will also resign as Bishop of Waikato.

The Southern Institute of Technology has produced its own small slice of heaven - a mass approved by the Catholic Church.

The Argentine ambassador in New Zealand has commended the police and community response after a young woman died when her car crashed on her way to work near Arrowtown. Carolina Patron Costas, 23, died at the scene when her car left Malaghans Rd and slid into a tree on her way to work at Millbrook Resort last month.

Catholic activism on the death penalty; a brief dispatch from Denmark

Rumors of the death of the church's passion for social justice have been greatly exaggerated, at least to judge by a high-profile international conference in Rome on Tuesday promoting global abolition of the death penalty, which was organized by the Community of Sant'Egidio. The conference was titled, "A World without the Death Penalty: No Justice without Life." At a time when critics sometimes accuse Catholicism of backing away from its broad peace-and-justice agenda, the event gave a much different impression -- not just in terms of the fight against capital punishment, but the overall vitality of Catholic civil society...

Unexpected sanity in Europe; Miguel Diaz; and Syria's Christians

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, here's something to be grateful for: Against all odds, the European Parliament on Wednesday managed to avoid opening a new front in the long-standing, and lamentable, "clash of civilizations" between secularism and religion. Despite a well-organized and fairly nasty campaign to block the nomination of Maltese Foreign Minister Tonio Borg, a devout Catholic, as Europe's new Commissioner of Health and Consumer Protection, the parliament voted to confirm him, thereby declining to embrace the view that traditional Christian beliefs are simply incompatible with "enlightened" 21st century European values ...
