Francis and the risk of overheated expectations
Despite the popular impression that Pope Francis represents a strong break with the past, those who remember the early days of Benedict's papacy can't help but be struck by some obvious parallels by what we've seen over the past month. Then, as now, people were talking about a demystification of the papacy. Shortly after his election, Benedict went by his old apartment in Rome's Piazza Leonina to pack his own belongings. Then, as now, the new pope also moved swiftly to ratify a desire expressed during the general congregation meetings of cardinals prior to the conclave. In light of these and other similarities, one can't help wondering if Francis will also trip over another parallel from the early period of Benedict's papacy: the risk of overheated expectations...

New Zealand needs a greater commitment to measuring the wellbeing of our country's children, say New Zealand's Catholic Bishops. Responding to the release of the UNICEF Innocenti report into Child well-being in rich countries, Archbishop John Dew, speaking on behalf of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference, said it was a matter of concern that New Zealand does not collect enough relevant data to be included in the ranking tables...

Prayer vigil (full text)
The prayer vigil for marriage, which was to be held in Seymour Square on Sunday, will now be held at St Mary's Catholic Church. The hour-long non-denominational vigil will allow people who oppose changes to the current legislation on same-sex marriage a time of prayer and reflection. The organiser, the Rev Brendan O'Hagan of the Wairau Presbyterian Parish, emphasises it is not a protest, or public demonstration. "It is a peaceful prayer vigil in celebration of the sanctity of marriage between man and woman," the Rev O'Hagan said. People who share these views are invited to attend the service which begins on Sunday at 2pm.

I spent this week in Argentina in search of insight into Pope Francis from the people who know him best as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the man who was their archbishop for fifteen years. For sure, the first impression here is deep national pride. Locals say there's probably never been a better-attended Holy Week in the history of Argentinian Catholicism than after Francis' election. A Via Crucis procession in Rosario, the country's second city, usually draws 200,000 people, but this time it attracted 350,000; attendance at the cathedral in Buenos Aires was estimated to be two to three times greater than 2012. All across the country, church-goers reported standing-room-only crowds and long lines for confession...
