A historic church building in Ngongotaha has been sold and will be
moved to Auckland, according to the previous owner. The Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church has stood for almost 100 years at its
present site on Taui St, but was closed by the Catholic Church and was
put up for tender late last year.

Station XV: Episode 70 — Pastors, princes and Pope Francis (July 15 2013)
With the panel down on numbers and an early recording date, it's a
more concise episode of The 15th Station this month as James and Gavin
discuss some of the big stories of the month, including Pope Francis's
desire for bishops to be more pastor than prince, the idea of the
Church reclaiming the word "matrimony" as marriage is redefined in
various jurisdictions and we take a look at the first meeting of
arguably the two most important Christian leaders in the world — Pope
Francis and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Francis in Brazil and a new scandal in Rome
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/francis-risks-brazil-and-new-scandal-rome
Let's be clear: Francis' first overseas trip July 22-29 to Brazil for
World Youth Day almost certainly will be perceived as a runaway hit.
He'll likely draw large and enthusiastic crowds, his freewheeling and
warm style should play as well on the road as it does in Rome, and his
palpable concern for the poor should strike deep chords in a society
where social justice is an idée fixe. That said, every papal trip is a
journey into the unknown, and Francis faces some real risks on this
outing, a few immediate and short-term, others longer-term and harder
to evaluate amid the euphoria...

reform are rocketing back and forth in Rome like tennis balls during a
heated volley. Consider what June and early July have brought ...

Ferment in Nigeria; Syria; the Vatican bank; and sex scandals
Perhaps it's the curmudgeon in me, but I'm always drawn to news stories that seem to upend conventional wisdom, and I award bonus points if the story challenges both liberal and conservative biases at the same time. That quirk probably explains why I find recent developments in Nigeria's Ahiara diocese so fascinating...

Can atheists get to heaven? Can a group of Catholics call their Catholic group "Catholic"? Can Pope Francis continue his charmed run with the media when he makes his first overseas trip next month? Can Catholics still be members of the Boy Scouts of America? And can someone without any pants parody the Pope? A series of fascinating questions — and some interesting answers — on this month's episode with James, Helen, Don and Gavin. Shifting plates in Rome and Tehran; Francis in Brazil; and St. John Paul
Thirty-five years ago, Iran and the Vatican seemed on parallel paths. The election of John Paul II in October 1978 signaled a new Catholic assertiveness, ending a time of introspection following the Second Vatican Council, while three months later, the triumphant return of Ayatollah Khomeini amid the Iranian Revolution unleashed a similar revival across the Shiite world.
The $64,000 question today is whether we're witnessing another shifting of the historical plates in Rome and Tehran, this one toward the moderates...

Catholic league celebrates 75 years of helping (full text)
Piako Post
Members of the Morrinsville Catholic Women's League are celebrating its 75th jubilee today. With around 100 new and old members from St Joseph's Catholic Church in Morrinsville attending, president Sophia Barker said everyone was welcome to come along and join the celebrations. Mrs Barker said the day would be about celebrating the league's commitment to helping the community and people overseas through church missions. It would also be about thanking members who volunteer and help fundraise for those who needed help, she said.

Wairarapa News
Last August I wrote a column about how, back in 1980, I employed a Vietnamese couple in my meat retailing business. Hoa and My Van Nguyen were boat people and had a nine-month-old daughter named Dyung when they arrived in Masterton. Last week, Hoa and My came to visit. We were, of course, delighted to see them. They had decided to come back and catch up with those people who had helped them as refugees and it was an emotional time for us all.
