The Marlborough District Council has a team working with the Awatere
community to work on solutions for buildings damaged in last year's
earthquake and to give its townships some "oomph" for the future. In
both Ward and Seddon, the churches had been damaged. In Seddon, the
Anglican and Catholic congregations were using the Catholic church
building, and in Ward, they were using the Anglican building.

During the Clinton administration, American politics developed a new
bit of argot: "FOB," meaning "friend of Bill," an intimate of the
president who enjoyed access to the corridors of power and perhaps
helped shape his agenda. Today Catholicism has its own emerging "FOB"
class, in this case standing for "friend of Bergoglio." The reference
is to those with personal ties to Jorge Mario Bergoglio, better known
to the world as Pope Francis ... Also: Christian fear in Gaza,
controversy in Korea, and Allen Down Under.

Catholic Church applauds Pope's stand
New Zealand's Catholic Church says it's heartened by Pope Francis's
willingness to tackle child abuse.
But a spokesperson says the Church can't comment on whether figures
released by the Pope reflect the New Zealand situation. The Church's
director of professional standards, Bill Kilgallon, said it was
impossible to apply such statistics to New Zealand.

Hard calls to make on heritage buildings

Wellington faces some hard decisions about its heritage buildings. The
hardest cases are iconic buildings which are part of Wellington's soul
but whose owners lack income. St Gerard's Monastery is the best
example.

Catholic Church has been awarded the city's highest heritage status.
Hamilton's new district plan, released this week, lists Euphrasie

in the dark but nonetheless a reliable record of my contemporaneous
feeling, it turns out there's plenty to recommend it.
