Wellington's Archbishop John Dew is in a list of 20 new Catholic
cardinals, announced by Pope Francis. Ahead of his trip to Rome to be
formally elevated next month, he talks about how life as a cardinal
might improve his Italian, and what he'd cook if the pope came to
dinner.

Pope Francis has rebooted the debate on family and sexual mores
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2015/01/20/pope-francis-has-rebooted-the-debate-on-the-family-and-sexual-mores/

Popes, like politicians, tend to craft their messages for multiple
audiences. Although Francis' principal concentration [during his visit
to the Philippines] may have been on the Filipinos who defied a
tropical storm to turn out in the millions, he simultaneously seemed
to be speaking to a much smaller group, one that wasn't even
physically present. In effect, Francis appeared to be talking to the
roughly 300 bishops and other Church leaders who will make up the next
Synod of Bishops on the Family in October...

Station XV: Episode 88 — Elevation, consternation and celebration
(January 16, 2015)

A first for the Church in New Zealand in 32 years – the elevation of a
Kiwi bishop to the College of Cardinals – leads the first episode of
The 15th Station for 2015, but there are plenty of stories for James,
Don and Gavin to mull over. Pope Francis's critique of "deviant forms
of religion" and his ruling on Chaldean priests who fear returning to
Iraq are also discussed, as is the leader of Catholic education in New
Zealand's recognition as a knight, becoming Sir Brother Patrick Lynch.
Meanwhile, some Argentinians are making a song and dance about Pope
Francis. Enjoy the show – and share the link with a friend as a New
Year resolution.

On the road, a good narrative is a pope's best friend
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2015/01/14/on-the-road-a-good-narrative-is-a-popes-best-friend/

The broad outlines of the usual narrative about Francis, as it has
taken shape in the media and in the popular imagination, are by now
familiar. He's seen as a peace-loving advocate for the poor and
downtrodden, as well as a maverick reformer steering Catholicism in a
broadly progressive direction. It's exposed him to some intra-Catholic
blowback, especially among more conservative and traditionalist
believers. Yet in terms of public opinion and media coverage in most
places, that narrative often means Francis gets a free pass where
other popes might find themselves in hot water...

Station XV: Episode 87 — 'Tis the season… (December 16, 2014)

Advent is a busy season for the Church, and that includes the Station
15 panel. Working through this month's full slate of topics are James,
Lucy, Don, Gavin and — returning after many years — Gabriel. Pope
Francis is the central figure in the episode, led by his first
episcopal appointment in New Zealand, but followed closely by his
comments on Islamic terrorism and his advice to theologians: "Listen
to the people." The panel also discusses parish amalgamations in New
Zealand, following an international trend, and the vexed question
"Would you baptise an alien?" Happy Christmas from the Station 15
crew.
