THE 15TH STATION PODCAST

April 16, 2016
Episode 103 — Communion, Commission, Closures and Contributions

The Pope's apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia leads off this month's episode and — spoiler alert — there are some strong feelings on the document. Pope Francis's Holy Thursday initiative to wash the feet of refugees of different faiths and the possible Royal Commission into child sexual abuse in New Zealand also feature, and Don, James and Gavin have a mix of sadness and support for the closure of three parishes in Dunedin. Maybe if they'd been receiving tithes via a new app, the parishes could've stayed open. Just joking. Mostly. Enjoy the show.

Sacred Heart Basilica 'well cared for' (photo)
The Timaru Herald
In Timaru we have a close relative of the Christchurch [cathedral], from the same architect F W Petre (pronounced Peter).
Legend has it that Petre fell out with the church over this project since he intended an even larger basilica than the one we see today. But surely he has provided enough – a simple glance and one is transported to Romanesque Europe by the sheer confidence of this structure.

Goodwill key to St Gerard's future
St Gerard's, the big brick complex up above Wellington's Oriental Bay, a Category 1 Historic Place, is yellow-stickered. Its owner, the International Catholic Programme of Evangelisation (ICPE), has a 2027 deadline for earthquake-strengthening, which may cost $20 million.

Jim's long-lost cousins emerge (photo)
A funeral service for Jim Grant was held at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sacred Heart in Wellington on Sunday. Yesterday, a woman read in her newspaper about strangers organising a funeral for the bachelor who lived and died alone, and she picked up her telephone. Funeral director Simon Manning, who organised Grant's farewell with Father James Lyon, said the woman identified herself to him as Grant's cousin...

Farewell statement from the head of the Catholic Education Office, Brother Patrick J. Lynch KNZM
On 9th October 1975 the Private Schools Conditional Integration Act was passed by Parliament on the last sitting day of the Third Labour Government, with the support of the National Party Opposition. In so doing, in the words of the late Norman Kirk, the Prime Minister who initially led the Third Labour Government, it "healed the one hundred year education running sore" whereby a significant sector of New Zealand schools had been denied State funding...

THE 15TH STATION PODCAST

Station XV: Episode 102 — Madonna, martyrs, madness and metal (March 16, 2016)

There are many reasons for doom and gloom when considering this month's lineup of topics — none more so than reflecting on the murder of four Missionaries of Charity in Yemen. They are "today's martyrs", Pope Francis said, and it's hard to disagree. In New Zealand, Bishop Patrick Dunn has spoken out against Madonna, who he said engages in highly offensive conduct in her current concert. In the US, causing offense seems to be something of a pastime for presidential hopeful Donald Trump. Pope Francis and leading Catholic academics have been highly critical of the billionaire's rhetoric and policies. Is the criticism fair? Lucy, Don, James and Gavin consider those questions, and also do their best to think about Iron Maiden's greatest hits.

'Vatileaks 2.0' trial may be where justice and wisdom collide

In an ideal world, doing the just thing and doing the wise thing would always coincide. Real life, however, is often not that simple, and the "Vatileaks 2.0" trial currently playing out in Rome may be a classic case where justice and wisdom collide...
