The end is nigh: MPs look to quickly ditch New Zealand's anti-blasphemy law  (video)
New Zealand's anti-blasphemy law could soon be scrapped, as MPs pledge to choose the best way of doing so. Prime Minister Bill English and the head of the Anglican church in Aotearoa New Zealand both voiced surprise the rarely-used law still existed, and they saw no use for it. Now, the Catholic Church has also labelled the law "archaic."

Pope Francis on Thursday approved a raft of sainthood decisions, including a miracle attributed to Capuchin Father Solanus Casey clearing the way for his beatification. Casey is more or less the American Padre Pio, a Capuchin healer and wonder-worker known for his simplicity, his availability, and his love for ordinary people.

** Vatican launches Belgium euthanasia investigation
The Vatican is formally investigating a group of psychiatric care centers in Belgium run by a Catholic religious order which has enforced that doctors in the facilities perform euthanasia. Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, will be overseeing the situation himself.

In a typically wide-ranging press conference at the end of his two-day trip to Egypt, Pope Francis warned that a widened conflict around nuclear-armed North Korea could have disastrous consequences, saying it could wipe out a "good part of humanity," The pontiff called for a diplomatic solution and said the role of the United Nations has been overly "watered down."

The President of the Vatican Information Authority (AIF), René Brülhart, was speaking at Oxford University's Blavatbik School of Government on reforming Vatican finances on Thursday night. Catholic Maori celebrate Easter in Tauranga (photo)
More than 2000 Catholic Maori gathered at Aquinas College this weekend to celebrate their faith over Easter. The annual Hui Aranga (Easter gathering) was held at Aquinas College with participants from 12 different clubs coming from across the North Island from as far as the Hokianga and Wellington.

Christians in India have denounced the interruption of Good Friday services by government officials in the parish of Sogandi in the Diocese of Chingleput in Tamil Nadu state. On the eve of Easter, the Christian community in Egypt was rocked by another deadly attack on their places of worship, with dozens killed and dozens more injured during services on Palm Sunday. The attacks came as the Middle East, Syria in particular, continues to be a hotbed of death and destruction. There was some joy in New Zealand, with the final profession of the first De La Salle Brother in 20 years, and the generosity of service of altar server in his 40s also brings a smile to faces after the difficulty of other stories. Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington says the one-year anniversary of the release of "Amoris Laetitia" spotlights the "beauty and relevance" of the document, including the way it does not reverse Church teaching on marriage but rather offers "greater emphasis on the role of the individual conscience in appropriating those moral norms in the person's actual circumstances."

In Syria, Christians find protection in the world's prayers
In Aleppo, Sister Maria Sponsa Iusti Ioseph says that Christians in Syria, though confronting incredibly harsh and difficult conditions, find solace and support in the prayers of other Christians around the world. Sponsa said that the words and prayers of Pope Francis were received with love in the war-torn country.

Hui Aranga 2017

Hui Aranga is an annual Maori celebration of Easter. It is held in a different rohe each year. This year, it is being hosted by Aquinas College, Tauranga.

The Good Friday service includes youth re-enacting Christ's Passion. Competitions include kapahaka, religious quizzes and sport for mokopuna, rangatahi and kaumatua.

Liturgies are at the following times:
Holy Thursday, 7pm: Mass of the Lord's Supper
Good Friday, 3pm: The Commemoration of the Passion
Holy Saturday, 7pm: Easter Vigil (Liturgy, not Mass)
Easter Sunday, 10am: Mass of the Resurrection

Visitors are welcome to attend any or all of these liturgies.
