Obituary: Taranaki faith community loses its 'shining light' (photo)
A "shining light" of the Taranaki faith community, and arguably one of the country's oldest altar servers, has died. At the age of 45, Sam Butler was a constant presence at the St Joseph parishes in New Plymouth and Waitara, where he donned the robes of the altar server for 16 years.

New Zealand's Catholic bishops have decided against adopting new international principles aimed at making priests who father children face up to their responsibilities, and will instead take their own approach.

Christchurch's new Bishop Ordained (28 Feb 2018)

On Saturday, 3 March 2018, the Catholic Church will ordain Bishop-Elect Paul Martin SM as the new Bishop of Christchurch. In December last year, the Vatican announced the appointment of Father Paul Martin SM as the next Bishop of the Christchurch Diocese. He will be the tenth Bishop of Christchurch and succeeds Bishop Barry Jones, who died in February 2016.  His Eminence Cardinal John Dew, Archbishop of Wellington, will ordain Bishop-Elect Paul ...

Dean Parker: Lent's religious self-denial does a drinker no harm
Wednesday was Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, far more important than the Valentine's Day it happened to land on because all around the world ex-Catholic sots, a massive tribe, give up the drink for 46 days out of habit and some sort of sense of obligation.

Caritas goes to work on Gita response
In just over 72 hours Tropical Cyclone Gita has swept across islands of the Pacific causing substantial damage to homes, livelihoods, places of refuge, and places of prayer. This is certainly the case in Tonga where Gita made landfall late 12 February as a category 4 tropical storm. Winds raged between 110 and 275 kmph causing waves over 11 metres tall.

The government needs to consider expanding its planned Royal Commission into child abuse to include religious organisations, Filipino community leaders say.

As the euthanasia debate heats up in New Zealand, so has criticism of some of the advocacy, including material found in a Catholic cathedral. In Canada, people of faith have much to be critical about in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's edict about government funding for a summer jobs program. In Christchurch, a city still recovering from devastating earthquakes several years ago, a new church has offered a ray of sunshine, but it's not so positive for Pope Francis when one looks at his work to tackle child sexual abuse — highlighted again on his recent trip to Chile. As always, Anna, Don, James and Gavin offer something a bit lighter after an intense but important discussion about some of the big Catholic stories of the month.
