Renewed calls for church to be part of Royal Commission
Otago Daily Times
Magnus Murray, a paedophile priest who left a trail of victims in his wake, was allowed to continue as a man of the cloth for nearly two decades after his offending was revealed to the Bishop of Dunedin. Survivors say it shows why the Catholic Church should be part of a Royal Commission into historic abuse. Chris Morris investigates...

Double celebration at Catholic church (photo)
A special Mass in Alexandra's Catholic Church of St John the Baptist yesterday marked a double celebration for the Alexandra parish. It was 60 years since the Catholic church building was blessed and opened, and 60 years since long-serving priest Fr Mervyn McGettigan was ordained in the same church.

It seems God is alive and well and living in Whanganui
New Zealand is becoming more secular, according to a new report — Faith and Belief in New Zealand by the Wilberforce Foundation — with fewer people following a religion. But in Whanganui, it seems God isn't giving up without a fight, as Jacob McSweeny discovers.

Episode 129 — Confession, Concession, Courts and Confusion (July 15, 2018)

The Catholic Church in New Zealand and Australia is under pressure to change the way it approaches the seal of Confession, with governments in both countries wondering if removing the seal would stem child sexual abuse. Bishops in both countries have a clear answer: "No." In the US, President Trump is pushing ahead with his second Supreme Court nominee in Catholic Brett Kavanaugh. Another president, Filipino Rodrigo Duterte, is also making headlines for his name-calling and his curious theology, while the NZ bishops are also wondering how their theology is helping (or hurting) the Church's evangelisation efforts. A Baptist church, however, is just wondering how they can show the face — and body — of Jesus to the world, literally. Join Anna, James and Gavin for this month's episode of The 15th Station.

Wellington's Sacred Heart Cathedral closes after being deemed a significant quake risk (photos)

Facing crises inside and out, Latin America's Church is hands-on
As news of escalating crises continues to roll in from various quarters of Latin America, the Catholic Church is taking a strikingly hands-on approach.
