Families upset at the decision to close the Mercy Parklands rest home and hospital in Auckland are looking at legal action to try to keep it open. The facility is owned by a trust of the Sisters of Mercy, which announced the closure last month, saying a shortage of nurses meant it could not run at full capacity. The facility had lost $400,000 over several months ...

Human Rights Act amended to 'protect religious communities', minister says
People's religious beliefs will be protected under a new amendment to the Human Rights Act. The Government announced on Saturday that it will amend the current law "to make sure religious communities feel safe and welcome in New Zealand".

Lake Hawea stalwart celebrates 95 after Covid cancelled birthday bash
Lake Hawea man Dick Cotter didn't get to have his 95th birthday bash on Saturday night because he was isolating with Covid-19. Cotter is celebrating his 95 years with his six children, 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren – and the clan are having some simple takeaways at the red-brick home he built with his own hands 56 years ago.

Abuse in Care Inquiry: Survivor condemns lack of 'genuine repentance' from churches in final hearing
A survivor of abuse says churches have missed a golden opportunity to really reflect on how Aotearoa-New Zealand came to have such an appalling record of abuse of people in care. Jacinda Thompson suffered sexual harassment by her Anglican minister in the early 2000's, and she has given evidence to the inquiry.

Flocks without shepherds - a third of New Zealand's dioceses without bishops
New Zealand is two bishops short, with one diocese waiting three years – and counting – for a replacement. The Hamilton and Palmerston North dioceses make up a third of the country's six ecclesiastical jurisdictions and serve more than 100,000 Catholics. Palmerston North's wait has been three years so far and Hamilton's almost a year.

The call has gone out for groups to get their floats in order for this year's Blenheim Christmas Parade as the deadline for registrations loom. One of the groups busy designing their float for this year's parade, on Saturday, December 3, was from St Mary's Preschool in Blenheim who were working alongside the older children next door at the primary school.

Whether at his local Lower Waitaki Golf Club, or representing Otago against Canterbury, Lachlan Coutts is right at home. The St Kevin's College pupil made a stunning start to his representative career, scoring two wins, a half and a loss for Otago Under-19 at the Hororata Golf Club in Christchurch last weekend.

Calf-leading cup returns to St Joseph's Stratford after 38 years
After nearly 40 years, a calf-leading cup has returned to St Joseph's Stratford. Pupils Clare Coatsworth and Lucy Joblin, both 10, and Max Joblin, 8, won the South Taranaki Boys and Girls' Calf Day team of three leading section.
