THE WORLD YOUTH DAY AND JUBILEE OF YOUNG PEOPLE (15-19 August) ...

... is about to get into full swing. I plan to update the Jubilee News page -http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/jubilee/news.html every day on which is something fresh to report, for the duration of the Youth Jubilee. But because of the uploading problem, the page I updated this weekend is still sitting here on my computer "all dressed up and nowhere to go". The best I can do for now is to offer you this link to the most recent summary report on the Jubilee from the ZENIT News Agency: http://zenit.org/english/archive/0008/ZE000811.html and to remind you that the Jubilee News page has an abundance of other News links through which you can follow this great event.

More than a million young pilgrims are expected to take part, and the experience will surely affect the course of their lives in many cases. It's entirely possible, for instance, that one of those present, know only to God, will be elected Pope in the second half of this century. May God bless our young pilgrims from the four corners of the earth. Please keep them in your daily prayers this coming week, and ask for them to be included in the Prayers of the Faithful at Mass.

The bishops' NEWS page ...
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/news/frnews.html
... has three recent press releases from Catholic Communications:

'70 young New Zealand Catholic pilgrims leave for Jubilee Year celebrations in Rome' (10 August)

'New Rector for National Seminary' (Monsignor David Michael Tiwha Bennett succeeds Father Brendan Dally as Rector of our national Holy Cross Seminary) (9 August 2000)

'The law should be changed, say NZ's Catholic bishops' (referring to the present legal situation by which a child under 16 requires parental permission for all forms of medical treatment except an abortion. Link to a related story in 'The Press' (9 August 2000)

Our Jubilee News page has a substantial number of links to reports about the Jubilee and background reports on prison conditions in several countries. Other "Jubilees in the Jubilee" linked on the page are those of doctors and motorcyclists, and the Jubilee Polish Pilgrimage.

A new section for the Jubilee of Young People and World Youth Day (15-20 August) has links to two reports on the event.

Finally, a Gay Pride Festival in Rome, scheduled to coincide with the mid-point of the Jubilee celebrations, is about to conclude. The event inspired a number of articles in the Catholic press and there are links to these also on the Jubilee News page.

In the next few days I'll be opening a new section on the page for World Youth Day and the Jubilee of Young People (15-20 August) and I hope this will coincide with a new section on the bishops' Web site 'For Young Catholics'.

Finally, this is likely to be a turbulent week in Rome with all sorts of demonstrations and accusations flying about. Please remember that on our World Catholic News page - http://newzealand/cathcom/news/frnews.html - you can find several links to free Catholic news services, updated daily.
