PAPAL VISIT TO AZERBAIJAN AND BULGARIA
"Enough of wars in the name of God! No more profanation in His holy name..." (Pope John Paul in Baku, Azerbaijan, 22 May 2002)
On Thursday Pope John Paul resumed the series of bridge-building visits to countries with Orthodox and Moslem majorities. He briefly visited the Moslem nation of Azerbaijan, where he met representatives of Islam, the Orthodox Church, and Judaism to affirm his conviction that religion must not serve to increase rivalry and hatred, but to promote the love of one's neighbour.
He is now in the mainly Orthodox nation of Bulgaria. He will confer with the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church, visit the historic monastery of Rila, and canonise three Catholic martyrs of the Communist era.
The official Website of the Papal visit to Bulgaria is here: http://www.popeinbulgaria.com The site includes daily reports of the papal visit, comprehensive information on the panorama of Christianity and other faiths in Bulgaria - including a link to the English-language Website of the Bulgarian Orthodox church - and plenty of information about the country in general. It includes the remarkable story of how the Jewish community of Bulgaria was saved from deportation and extermination during World War II.
Daily reports from the secular press on the Pope's journey - in print, audio and video - are here: http://fullcoverage.yahoo.com/fc/World/Pope_John_Paul_II/

The article "Let the Children Come" is thought-provoking as is "A Litany for Children". I liked the Millennial Generation, some good questions in that article. BETHLEHEM SIEGE
Jerusalem, May 10 2002 (Zenit.org).- Following the lifting of the siege of Bethlehem's Basilica of the Nativity, the Franciscans said the outcome shows how peace is reached through dialogue, not violence. "In this case cooperation and willingness to dialogue have been the sole source of this ray of light that may be a step forward toward a global plan for a stable peace," the minister general of the Friars Minor, Father Giacomo Bini, said in a message to ZENIT. The Franciscans make three appeals to all people of good will:
The first: "Help us to heal the wounds opened by this conflict between two peoples who can and must live together in the same land."
The second: "Help us to rebuild a culture of coexistence, to not be ashamed of this period of our history in which we have witnessed these tragedies without being able to stop them.´"
The third: "Help us to continue to hope in a peace that is possible, based on justice and forgiveness."
The Franciscans also thanked all those who supported the men and women religious who were confined in the Monastery of the Nativity during the siege: John Paul II, the politicians and diplomats who helped, and the journalists, who reported on their situation.

EVANGELISATION
"Promoter of Parish Cells of Evangelisation to Speak at Centre" Catholic Adult Education Centre, Archdiocese of Sydney http://www.caec.com.au/[I have included this Australian event and the associated links because someone in New Zealand might want to follow up the idea of Parish Cells of Evangelisation. ML]
Don Pi.Gi. Perini, the priest responsible for the world-wide spread of the system of Parish Cells of Evangelisation, a program of parish renewal, is to speak at the Adult Education Centre later this month. When Fr Perini took over his parish of San Eustorgio some years ago, it was dying, with very few people attending Mass. He came upon the idea of forming small groups or cells of his parishioners who would pray together, support one another, reflect on the Sunday Gospel and endeavour to invite non-practising Catholics to join the group. When the group had doubled they would divide into two and begin again. With prayer and persistence they slowly brought their parish back to life as the first cells grew and multiplied to more than 100 cells. The system, which he called Parish Cells of Evangelisation has since spread to 28 countries, including Australia. It has had particular success in de-christianised France. Fr Perini will be accompanied to Sydney by Fr Eugene Ahern, parish priest of St Francis of Assisi Parish in Mill Park, Victoria, who began Cells in his parish three years ago and now has 150 parishioners involved. Given the widespread interest in the movement, Fr Ahern invited Fr Perini to Australia, and will answer questions on how Cells work in the Australian context.

WORLD COMMUNICATIONS DAY
Rome (Fides) - "For the Church the new world of cyberspace is a summons to the great adventure of using its potential to proclaim the Gospel message. This challenge is at the heart of what it means at the beginning of the millennium to follow the Lord's command to "put out into the deep" / "Duc in altum" (Lk 5:4). In his message for the 36th World Communications Day, celebrated on the Feast of the Ascension, Pope John Paul II underlines the "magnificent opportunities for evangelization" offered by the Internet if used with competence and clear awareness of its strengths and weaknesses. In particular the fields in which the Internet can be of concrete help for evangelization are education about the Christian message and continuing instruction and catechesis.

BETHLEHEM SIEGE
(Daily reports appear on http://www.fides.org/home-ing.htm under 'Breaking News)
[Extract from the latest reports] The agreement is almost ready, but tension in Bethlehem is still high. This morning one of the Palestinians barricaded inside the besieged Nativity compound was wounded by an Israeli military sniper. The army said the man was positioning explosive at the one of the compound gates.... Father David Jaeger, Holy Land Custody spokesman, said: "Both sides have contributed to progress, to reach a definitive agreement. Noting this positive fact we call on the parties to rapidly make the final effort needed to put an end to the drama at the Nativity Church. We recall that the situation is fragile and explosive, as the most recent shooting episodes demonstrate. We call on the sides to settle the matter as soon as possible" (27/4/2002)

Nats Will Establish A Tomb Of The Unknown Warrior Wednesday, 24 April 2002 Press Release by the leader of the National Party, Bill English http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/PA0204/S00357.htm [Extract] "... We will also establish a Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at the National War Memorial. The Unknown Warrior would represent all New Zealanders, whether they be navy, army or air force personnel. The inscription on the tomb will read: "All these were honoured in their generations and were the glory of their times" Ecclesiasticus 44: 7.
[The announcement prompted the following reaction from Andre Hansen. It seems he didn't know that Ecclesiasticus (aka The Wisdom of Ben Sirach) is a canonical book in Catholic and Orthodox Bibles. To be fair, it was Scoop's editors that labelled him a "Bible Scholar'; Mr Hansen doesn't make that claim. Feedback: Bible Scholar Questions Bill's Research Scoop Feedback Wednesday, 24 April 2002 http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/HL0204/S00140.htm I was studying Mr English's proposed plans for an Unknown Soldier memorial, and couldn't help noticing that he quoted from the Bible. Not only did the Nats get the name of the book wrong (it's Ecclesiastes, not Ecclesiasticus), but also there is no chapter 44, verse 7, in that book. It only goes up to 12. I've reviewed the King James, New International and American Standard bibles, and can't find that quote anywhere. I enjoy Scoop and its content, but perhaps you should make sure - in the case of elementary facts like a bible quote - that your contributors get it right. Thanks. Andre Hansen
[His comment was followed by a stampede to put *him* right (see below). One writer hints there could be trouble if a verse from a book that is not considered canonical by Protestants appears on the memorial. However, the Labour Party seems likely to be re-elected to government later this year and also favours building a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, but you can bet your life the inscription on it won't be the one the National Party favours ... Education is the fruit of good example. To educate a child, one must love children and love them all equally. Children need to be treated with kindness, charity and mercy; one needs to bear uncomplainingly with their defects. This is for the glory of God, the good of religion and the salvation of children.

THE RETURN OF BISHOP POMPALLIER
"Bishop Pompallier is laid to rest" (video report 2m 9s) TVNZ Saturday evening news http://onenews.nzoom.com/news_detail/0,1227,95245-1-7,00.html
French Catholic Bishop returned to spiritual homeland in NZ The Melbourne Age 20 April 2002 http://www.theage.com.au/breaking/2002/04/20/FFXYY4FD80D.html New Zealand's first Catholic bishop, who left the former British colony 134 years ago, was laid to rest today in the far north settlement of Motuti, Hokianga. About 4,000 people from New Zealand, France and the South Pacific attended the local church, Hata Maria, to celebrate the homecoming of bishop Jean Baptiste Francois Pompallier....
Loved bishop reaches his final resting place (photo) NZ Herald 19.04.2002 http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?thesection=news&thesubsection=&storyI\ D=1592326 The biggest welcome-home party the Hokianga has ever seen will reach its zenith in the tiny settlement of Motuti tomorrow for the burial of Bishop Jean-Baptiste Francois Pompallier, the first Catholic bishop in New Zealand....
The bishop's bones, by Tim Watkin (photo) NZ Herald 20.04.2002 http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?thesection=news&thesubsection=&storyI\ D=1442368 At the end of The Strand [in Russell], outside Pompallier (the house, no longer called the House but merely Pompallier), a marquee has been erected on the front lawn in preparation for its former owner's return. The question I've come north to ask is: why have the Catholics and northern Maori gone to so much trouble to exhume the bishop's bones from his French grave and bring them halfway round the world? The past, it is said, is a foreign country. Perhaps Pompallier should have been allowed to remain there. Why bother his rest if his adopted country isn't bothered about him? ...

"Custody meets Greek Orthodox and Armenian patriarchs Palestinians and Israelis: Arafat is the one who's stalling" [Extract] Jerusalem (Fides 19/4/2002) - This morning at 11am there will be an emergency meeting of the Custodian of the Holy Land, Father Giovanni Battistelli, the Armenian Orthodox Patriarch and the Greek Orthodox Patriarch to find a solution to the question of Bethlehem which has reached [a stalemate]. There is little hope they will succeed. The mixed Israeli-Palestinian commission charged with finding a solution has postponed its meeting to a date still to be set. Palestinian and Israeli sources blame Mr. Arafat for the stall in negotiations... Hmmm. Like many, I consider myself a "spiritual" person, but what exactly does that mean? It's not that I don't like the idea of churches, in fact they are among my favourite places to visit when sightseeing abroad. But I have always felt the concept of regular church attendance to be alienating, even though the ritual of a church service would probably provide some respite in a chaotic life such as mine. And I wasn't really sure why. So I did a quick straw poll among my many non churchgoing friends as to why we don't pop in occasionally for a new perspective and a recharge of hope and inspiration....

So I did a quick straw poll among my many non churchgoing friends as to why we don't pop in occasionally for a new perspective and a recharge of hope and inspiration....

http://www.fides.org/home-ing.htm ('Breaking News')
Jerusalem 12 April 2002 (Fides) – The Franciscan Custodians of the Holy Land have decided to launch an appeal to Jewish communities all over the world to pressure the Israeli government to order that the electrical power supply at the Franciscan monastery in Bethlehem be turned on again and that water be supplied to the Friars, now at the end of their strength. The Custody tried to convince the Israeli authorities to do this but the only reply was "do not disturb us again".
Custody spokesman Father David Jaeger OFM, told Fides: "The friars cannot resign themselves to the consequences. This is why we rely on our "elder brothers" the Jews, and on the traditional goodwill between the Jews and the Franciscan family. We recall the heroism of Franciscans who saved many Jews from the Shoah, hiding them in numerous monasteries, including Assisi. Today we ask their help".

The couple had three sons and became, King says, "a prominent Catholic clan", well respected in the city. BOOK REVIEW
The Three Johns, by Richard Kew http://www.latimer.org.nz/reviews/articles/three_johns.shtml Reflections on George Weigel's "Witness to Hope, a biography of John Paul II" and "John Stott the Early Years", a biography by Bishop Timothy Dudley Smith
I had intended to make this a serious comparison of the lives of three men, all named John, and all of whose biographies I have read in the last few months: John Paul II, John Stott, and John Spong. As I thought, prayed, and reviewed the source materials, making several false starts, I eventually concluded that Bishop Spong just could not be made to fit with this plan. The reason is simple. For me, at least, it is impossible to find legitimate points of comparison when attempting to put him alongside the other two, each of whom I perceive to be a towering figure....
