World Youth Day Cross and Icon at Parliament (22 Jun 2007)
http://www.cathcom.org.nz/media.php
On Tuesday 19 June, the World Youth Day Cross and Icon were in Wellington on
Day 10 of the 18-day pilgrimage through New Zealand. There have been many
highlights during these days - at schools, parishes, in procession and at
places of spiritual and historical significance - but especially in the
quiet times of prayer and reflection when people paused to consider the
meaning of the cross in the life of every Christian. The welcome of the
Cross and Icon in the grounds of Parliament was one of these special
occasions...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC

Theologians challenged to set the pace for inclusive conversations
It's the nature of my job that I attend far too many conferences. Over the
course of a decade reporting on "all things Catholic," I've sat through
thousands of papers, lectures and keynote speeches, in various languages and
on various continents. Even measured against that volume of material,
however, the Daniel Finn's presidential address June 10 at the annual
Catholic Theological Society of America convention ranks as one of the most
impressive presentations I've ever heard...

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/topic/story.cfm?c_id=500818&objectid=10443798
Parliament's prayer is now unlikely to be removed, or de-Christianised. The
Prime Minister has seen to that with an emphatic distancing of herself and
her Government from the Speaker's survey of MPs on both possibilities. In
the tradition of Pontius Pilate, she has washed her hands of this matter.
National's John Key also sees no reason for change so the chances of a
crusade against the prayer are over, for now...

FROM THE SECULAR PRESS

Press Release: NZ Council of Christian Social Services
Bureaucracies may undermine Budget intent
http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PO0705/S00367.htm
The aims expressed in the Budget for working with families and communities
affected by poverty, social exclusion and family violence are good ideals.
Properly implemented these initiatives will assist in developing a more just
and compassionate society, says the New Zealand Council of Christian Social
Services (NZCCSS). “However, it is the experience of NGOs that the
bureaucratic processes of some government agencies often result in the
actual implementation of Budget aims being short-changed, says NZCCSS
President Ross Kendrew...

'CHAMPAGNAT'

http://www.maristbrothers.org.nz/schools'_newsletter.htm

A newsletter of the New Zealand Marist Brothers for Boards of Trustees and
Staff of Marist Schools and Schools with Marist traditions in New Zealand.

In the April 2007 issue ...

Brother Denis Turner writes this Newsletter from Invercargill. He talks of
the city of Invercargill and all the changes he has noted since his return
in February. The city sounds most interesting and vibrant.

Two school newsletters are commented on - John Paul 11 High School in
Greymouth and St John’s College in Hamilton. Both newsletters show a
dedication to the students in these schools.

Mary Kirk, DRS at Marcellin College speaks of the start of the year and the
positive efforts made to integrate the years 7 & 8 into the spirit of the
school and build the family spirit. Many activities are described. All
schools have a special charism (gift). As the founder of the Marist
Brothers, St Marcellin Champagnat rested his charism upon his love of Jesus
and the intercessory power of Mary. This is reflected in the motto , “Ad
Jesum per Mariamâ€"All to Jesus through Mary.â€

New Venture
Early in 2007, the Marist Brothers opened a community in Wellington as a
home for young men. The following is taken from the brochure introducing the
Ministry. The FM connection is about belonging to a community committed to
faith in Christ and his mission for the world, as was Mary, the first
disciple. In short FM means: Faith and Mission - Following Mary in the
footsteps of Marcellin.

Verdon College Reunion

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

http://ncrcafe.org/node/507

The pope's communication paradox
Benedict XVI hadn't even stepped off the papal plane at Rome's Ciampino
airport on Monday, ending his May 9-13 Brazilian swing, when controversy
from the trip caught up with him. Spokespersons for Brazil's indigenous
populations were incensed by comments the pope made in Aparecida late Sunday
afternoon, asserting that the arrival of Christianity did not amount to "the
imposition of a foreign culture" upon the native peoples of the New World.
To the natives, that seemed a nasty bit of historical revisionism...

A white wedding like no other
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/category/story.cfm?c_id=14&objectid=10439311
The bride in white, the groom in his best bib and tucker and the vicar in
his robes, standing framed by the arched stained-glass windows of the stone
Anglican chapel. So far, so normal. But forget the traditional vision of a
wedding - this is a vastly different story. It is one of sacred vows sold
for commercial gain - the bride and groom are a pizza and a pie, and the
service is a commercial product launch in which the only authentic
ingredient is the venue...

This Newsletter of the Marist Brothers' New Zealand province is distributed
four times year to Marist Communities, lay partners and associates and
others interested in the happenings within the New Zealand Marist family.

In the March 2007 issue ...

1. The newsletter commences with a wonderful vision of hope from Archbishop
Mataca in Fiji followed by this beautiful prayer -

We come before you Lord accompanied by Saint Marcellin Champagnat and
sharing the Marist vision entrusted to us. We know what we are about …
planting seeds that one day will grow.
We water seeds already planted in the hearts of the people of our
communities.
We know that we cannot do everything, and we sense being liberated in
accepting that.
We hear your call, Lord, to do something and we do it as well as we can.
We are workers, not master builders, ministers and not messiahs.
We are prophets for a future not our own, not seeing the end results.
We ask that we too, with Saint Marcellin, may have hearts that know no
bounds.
We lift our hearts to you in prayer with Jesus and our Good Mother Mary, in
solidarity with all those in need at this time. Amen.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

http://ncrcafe.org/node/507

Benedict's priorities: Feeding humanity's spiritual and material hunger
After the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), no local Catholic church on
earth seized the social thrust of the council's message with more enthusiasm
than Brazil. The largest Catholic country on earth, Brazil also became the
most important laboratory for liberation theology, which proclaimed a
"preferential option for the poor" and thrust the church into struggles for
progressive social change...

Also ... Daily reports of Pope Benedict's Apostolic Visit to Brazil: Day
Four: Facing dramatic losses, Benedict says: ‘It’s worth it to stay
Catholic!’ ; Benedict issues dramatic warning to drug dealers, but his real
message is Christ ... Day Three: Pope calls Brazil's bishops to order ;
Benedict holds up a model of authentic liberation theology ... Day Two:
Mexican cardinal says pope repeated bishops' line on abortion ; Benedict
strikes softer tone ; Pope will say something 'very important' on social
justice, Martino promises ; Hopelessness, not Pentecostalism, as Brazil's
mega-trend in religion ; A new era of Catholic/Pentecostal 'good feelings'?
