Hermann Curry was a year away from semi-retirement in Samoa when he met his unfortunate death in a Lower Hutt bus depot. He was buried on Monday in the blue blazer he treasured as an old boy of Chanel College in Apia. The foundation pupil of the college, opened in 1962, had planned to attend its 50th anniversary celebrations on the return home...

Benjamin Revell was a brave sailor who fell not in action but to a deadly illness. Today admirals, commanders, captains, a cabinet minister and, most importantly, his wife and daughter, who he battled so hard for, united to farewell him. A Catholic requiem mass merged with Samoan singing and the muffled drums, the uniforms and brass of the navy to farewell a man described by friend Tom Swingler as "a gentle giant (who) came and saw and conquered our hearts".

Shunned from the centre of the Anglican settlement to a site near the railway line and close to the old gasworks, the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament has still managed to wow visitors and locals alike, providing a spectacle more exotic than the somewhat austere but unsurprisingly better placed Anglican Christ Church Cathedral. Ironic then that as a result of extensive earthquake damage, the fabric of the Catholic cathedral is finding a new home in another industrial part of the city.

He has new research on the Shroud of Turin which for centuries has been regarded by some as the burial cloth of Jesus – by others, as the most elaborate hoax in history. After five years of painstaking study, Thomas reveals the results of his research in his book, The Sign. He believes he can prove beyond doubt that the Shroud is an authentic relic of Jesus and, that it inspired the belief in the Resurrection.

A poll average from Rome on the next pope
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/poll-average-rome-next-pope

Right now, the "next pope" conversation isn't creating much buzz. There's no sign of a health crisis around Benedict XVI, and Catholic attention around the world is focused on more local matters: the LCWR crackdown in the States, the disciplining of liberal priests and calls for Cardinal Sean Brady to resign over the sex abuse crisis in Ireland, a political scandal involving Communion and Liberation in Italy, and so on. Yet with an 85-year-old pope beginning to show his age, speculation about who might come next is always in the background, even if it's on a low boil...

As the spokesperson of a Catholic bioethics centre, there are some who discount my message because of my religious affiliation, rather than on the basis of its merits. Bishop Pompallier brought new media to the Maori
http://www.cathnews.com/article.aspx?aeid=3119
Many in the Catholic community are wary of new media, finding it foreign and confusing. For those who have not been forced to use it in their workplace, the challenge of embracing digital formats often feels like too much hard work for little tangible benefit. Yet just last week, on a quick visit to New Zealand, I discovered a story of how, more than 150 years ago, the Church embraced new media with a zeal and passion that breathed new life into a whole culture, and transformed the lives of thousands of people...

Dark days that led to the light of God (photo)

They were lazy, hazy nights. Political researcher Laura Adshead, a striking young blonde, was relaxing in a bar on the Kings Road. It was a Friday evening and she had brought her new boyfriend, David, to meet her childhood best friend. The year was 1990. To passers-by, the gathering was unremarkable. This was the breeding ground of twinset-and-pearl Sloane Rangers after all, and this group did not stand out. How things change. This week, Adshead was revealed to have turned her back on a life of drugs and alcohol to become a nun. Now aged 44, she's committed to a life of celibacy and prayer as Sister John Mary. Her closely cropped hair is hidden by a traditional wimple. And who was that devoted boyfriend? UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

Recognize martyrs around the world by canonizing one of their own

Once again, Christians found themselves on the firing line last Sunday, with 19 people killed in Nigeria and one in Kenya in attacks on three churches. Those atrocities, alas, have rated no more than a blip on the global radar screen, largely because such things have become chillingly familiar. Every time something like this happens, the Vatican, to its credit, is usually quick to speak out. Yet more and more, an unavoidable question looms: Isn't there something the Vatican could do beyond issuing statements? ...

The View from Down Here: April 24, 2012

Religion and politics collide on a fairly grand scale in this week's episode of The View from Down Here. Brendan and Gavin chat about the Illinois bishop who has strongly criticised President Obama — only to see a secular group try to have the diocese's tax-exempt status revoked. The homily in question can be read or viewed here, so you can make up your own mind on whether Bishop Jenky crossed the line. We also talk about a same-sex marriage referendum in Washington state, voter ID laws and the Vatican's criticism of some women religious. We hope you enjoy the show.

By far, the biggest Vatican story at the moment in the American media market is an announced overhaul of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, the main umbrella group for superiors of the roughly 400 women's orders in the States. The move has been presented by the Vatican as a "reform" but styled as a "crackdown" in most press coverage...

Other than news coverage of Anzac ceremonies, it seems the main networks have surrendered significant marking of our most popular national day to Maori Television. Matai Smith will present from Te Aute College in Hawkes Bay, where 250 former pupils served in the 28th Maori Battalion during World War II, including Te Moananui-a-kiwa Ngarimu, who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery and gallantry. But it is another medalled member of D Company who is the focus of the evening's main documentary, Charlie Shelford, Rebel Hero (8.30pm)...

Benedict XVI a pope of ironies
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/benedict-xvi-pope-ironies

For Benedict XVI, this has been a week of milestones. The pontiff turned 85 on Monday, making him the oldest pope in the last 110 years and one of just six to reign past 85 in the last half-millennium. On Thursday, Benedict also marked the seventh anniversary of his election to the papacy in April 2005. Yet if we take the last seven years into view, not just the last week, the picture changes considerably. Quite often, the most intriguing feature of this papacy isn't how Benedict has confirmed expectations, but rather how he's confounded them. Indeed, if John Paul II was a "pope of firsts" and a "pope of surprises," Benedict XVI may well go down as a "pope of ironies." The following are eight such defining ironies, meaning sharp contrasts between the stereotypes and mythology that surrounded Benedict at the beginning versus the lived reality of his reign...

A Vatican document to make Socrates proud
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/vatican-document-make-socrates-proud
As Pope Paul VI once famously told the United Nations, the Catholic church likes to think of itself as an "expert in humanity." Development of Catholic social teaching over the last 120 years is a good example, as the church has tried to bring its moral tradition to bear on questions of economic justice. Yet whenever the church tries to say something on economics, it faces a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" dilemma about whether or not to get concrete...

An Easter message from the leaders of the Auckland churches: Rising hope

April 3, 2012: It's just Brendan and Gavin again this week, and there's a long list of stories to cover. After a quick chat on the primaries and on Ron Paul and his curious inability to attract Catholic voters, we navigate through atheist waters, wonder about President Obama cosying up to Planned Parenthood and discuss this curious story of a woman who's in trouble with the law over her decision to baptise her children. And there's also some musical interlude from Catholic rapper Righteous B.

Benedict XVI and the lament of the hawks
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/benedict-xvi-and-lament-hawks

Three decades ago, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger rose to fame as the architect of the Vatican's crackdown on liberation theology in Latin America, which he saw as a dangerous baptism of Marxist class struggle. Since his election as pope, Benedict XVI has seemed less notable for his anti-communist audacity than his appetite for détente. Benedict's March 26-28 visit to Cuba, in which he met both the Castro brothers but none of the pro-democracy dissidents, offered the latest case in point ...

LENT 2012

http://www.caritas.org.nz/take-action/events/lent-2012

Lent 2012 began on Ash Wednesday 22 February and ends with Easter on 8 April. Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand's theme for Lent 2012 is "Called by faith to act with generous hearts". This theme was inspired by the words of Pope Benedict XVI addressed to the Caritas Internationalis General Assembly for 2011.

The Lenten theme is being promoted in schools as "Hearts filled with hope" – recognising that good people everywhere have hopeful hearts. Our schools resource was sent to all Catholic schools in early December and is also downloadable from the Website. Parish Lenten resources are available from the same page and visitors may donate to the Caritas Lent Appeal there.

The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament once housed a meeting room in its now demolished south tower; a belfry full of scores and musical archives. Stands, lights, instruments, and music storage cupboards filled the galleries. Today on the cathedral's northern tower sit the sad remnants of its choir room, wall posters fluttering and lights swinging in the wind.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic

Benedict's gentle debunk of clericalism
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/benedicts-gentle-debunk-clericalism

Pope Benedict XVI's diplomatic high-wire act in Havana, pressing the case for religious freedom but avoiding direct clash with the Castro regime, was the main news flash out of his March 23-28 trip to Mexico and Cuba. Yet there was another leitmotif to the outing, more subtle but arguably more decisive for the church across Latin America. The pope offered a gentle, yet unmistakable, debunking of clericalism...
