Catholic divorce debate heats up
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/10664782/Catholic-divorce-debate-heats-up
New Zealand's senior Catholic believes the church is ready to change
its hardline stance on divorcees - something he began lobbying for
almost a decade ago. Archbishop John Dew is among bishops worldwide
pushing for a liberal reform of church rules which ban Catholics who
divorce, then remarry, from taking Communion - effectively excluding
them from church life.

Will the pope challenge Turkey on anti-Christian bias?
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2014/10/30/will-pope-francis-challenge-turkey-on-anti-christian-bias/
Recently the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis will travel to Turkey
Nov. 28-30, the official purpose for which is largely ecumenical.
He'll visit Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople on the feast of
St. Andrew, considered their patron in much the same way Catholics
regard St. Peter as the first pope. But what's not yet clear is how
much of a push Francis will make on another front: An increasingly
virulent anti-Christian climate in Turkey, which tends to simmer
constantly until it boils over into lethal violence.

Station XV: Episode 85 — Synod, Saints and Sunday Surprises (October 16, 2014)
The Synod on the Family — and the various reports coming out of Rome —
dominate the first half of this month's episode, with New Zealanders'
views on family life, Archbishop John Dew's opinion and the thoughts
of an Australian couple making headlines. In other news, Don, James
and Gavin discuss the effect of migration on the Church in New
Zealand, efforts to advance the cause of the woman who could become
New Zealand's first saint and an initiative in the United States to
inject life into parishes with dwindling numbers.

In bureaucracies everywhere, when someone's interests are threatened
by a cycle of reform, one time-honored resistance strategy is to dig
up dirt on the reformers. We've already seen it under Pope Francis
with regard to Monsignor Battista Ricca, a 58-year-old Italian cleric
tapped by the pontiff in June, 2013 as his delegate to the Vatican
bank, monitoring a clean-up operation intended to spare the bank
future scandals. Now a bigger target seems to be in the sights of the
Italian news magazine l'Espresso, in the form of Australian Cardinal
George Pell, the secretary for the economy under Francis and
effectively the pope's finance czar...

Arrest of former Polish prelate is inkblot test for sex abuse reform
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2014/09/24/arrest-of-former-polish-prelate-is-an-inkblot-test-for-sex-abuse-reform/
In many ways, the case of ex-Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski, the former
Vatican diplomat accused of paying underage boys in the Dominican
Republic for sexual acts, has become an inkblot test for broader
impressions of where the Catholic Church stands on recovery from its
child sexual abuse scandals.
Maybe Francis isn't after a lurch to the left, but a new balance
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2014/09/23/pope-francis-international-theological-commission-new-balance/
Especially on the heels of rumors that Pope Francis is about to demote
American Cardinal Raymond Burke to a ceremonial Vatican job,
Saturday's choice of Blase Cupich as the new Archbishop of Chicago
cemented impressions in many quarters of a lurch to the left in
Catholicism. Taken together, these steps seem to paint a clear
political picture. Therein, however, lies the problem...
