After a pummelling in Philomena, the deceits exposed in Doubt and the
just plain wacko antics of Angels and Demons (not to mention the
scandal of the upcoming Spotlight), here's a film that casts the
Catholic Church and its representatives as having a positive effect.

Pope seems to hint at no sweeping change on divorced, remarried

Decoding what it means to say the Vatican has a 'gay lobby'
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2016/01/15/decoding-what-it-means-to-say-the-vatican-has-a-gay-lobby/
Since the Vatican is a global institution, understanding it often
requires at least a passing familiarity with a few foreign languages.
Perhaps the most challenging language is what one might call
"Vaticanese". One recent entry in that lexicon is "gay lobby," which
emerged during the first Vatican leaks scandal under Pope Benedict XVI
in 2012. Here's the confusing thing: When Italians say "gay lobby,"
they don't mean "lobby" in the conventional political sense, and they
often don't really mean "gay" in the sense that sex has much to do
with it ...

http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2016/01/07/whats-on-pope-francis-plate-for-the-first-part-of-2016/
Pope Francis is famously a pontiff who seems to be missing an "off"
switch, but the first quarter of 2016 shapes up as a period so dense
with activity it may tax even his prodigious reservoirs of energy.
From foreign policy challenges to a potential turning point in
Catholic/Jewish relations, from a six-day trip to Mexico that includes
a stop at the US border, to a jam-packed schedule for his jubilee Year
of Mercy, the opening part of the year promises to be full of drama...

Let your Christmas light shine on others: the Christmas message of the
Auckland Christian communities

Tomorrow, the Sunday before Christmas, in churches and homes the world
over, people will be lighting the fourth candle in the Advent wreath.
In this centuries-old tradition, over the four Sundays before
Christmas, the lighting of the candles of the Advent (from the Latin
'to come') wreath symbolises the waiting and expectation as we look to
the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Episode 99 – Wall to (almost) wall Pope Francis (December 16, 2015)
It's fair to say Pope Francis is dominating headlines around the
world, so he's doing the same on The 15th Station. Whether it's the
opening of the Jubilee Door – and Year of Mercy – or his calling for
swift action in response to the Paris climate talks, Francis continues
to be a media rock star. And apparently he's also something of a
musical rock star, with a new CD launched featuring the Pontiff.
There's other discussion of music on this month's show, with James,
Don and Gavin wondering if there's such a thing as "objectively good"
Church music. Merry Christmas from The 15th Station family and we'll
speak with you all in January for Episode 100!

The local Catholic hierarchy says it's "most concerned" after
misinformation was spread in discussions about a troubled Auckland
Maori school. Yesterday, Northcote school Hato Petera released an
upbeat statement about its future, announcing boarding facilities
would be open next year. But today the Catholic Diocese of Auckland
said it was "surprised and most concerned" about the statement, and
said the new group of trustees was not legally constituted. "The
diocese is deeply concerned about the misinformation that has been
given to students and their whanau, as boarding facilities will not be
available" ...

Plus: the new name of colonialism, and 'all in' on climate change
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2015/11/28/for-pope-francis-wisdom-comes-from-the-poor/
Historically speaking, Christians always have been obsessed with
debating the proper sources of teaching authority. One of the towering
issues in the Protestant Reformation, for instance, was whether the
Bible alone or also Church authority can claim to provide binding
truth about God's will. Pope Francis, certainly recognizes the
importance of both Scripture and tradition. Yet it's also clear that
at the personal level, he prizes yet another font of wisdom with an
almost equally spiritual fervor. In a word, Francis takes his cues
from the poor...

For Pope Francis, wisdom comes from the poor
Plus: the new name of colonialism, and 'all in' on climate change
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2015/11/28/for-pope-francis-wisdom-comes-from-the-poor/
Historically speaking, Christians always have been obsessed with
debating the proper sources of teaching authority. One of the towering
issues in the Protestant Reformation, for instance, was whether the
Bible alone or also Church authority can claim to provide binding
truth about God's will. Pope Francis, certainly recognizes the
importance of both Scripture and tradition. Yet it's also clear that
at the personal level, he prizes yet another font of wisdom with an
almost equally spiritual fervor. In a word, Francis takes his cues
from the poor...

Anglican appointment reveals continuity between Pope Francis and Benedict
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2015/11/25/anglican-appointment-reveals-continuity-between-pope-francis-and-benedict/
At the level of style, Pope Francis is obviously a somewhat jarring
contrast with his predecessor, emeritus Pope Benedict XVI. Francis
generally comes off as a warm Latin populist, Benedict more a cool
German intellectual. Leaders, however, promote either continuity or
rupture not primarily at the level of style but rather policy, and on
that front, one can make a case that Francis has a surprising amount
in common with Benedict. A new chapter in this largely untold story of
continuity came on Tuesday ...
