THE 15TH STATION PODCAST

Station XV: Episode 101 — Pope, Patriarch, Penance and Passing Away
(February 17, 2016)

It's a mix of joy and sadness in Episode 101 of The 15th Station. The
sadness comes from the passing of Christchurch Bishop Barry Jones, who
died last week after suffering a number of strokes and a heart attack.
James, Don and Gavin reflect on Bishop Barry's role as pastor and
shepherd, especially in the wake of Christchurch's devastating
earthquakes. You can hear more about Bishop Barry in this video
tribute from friend of the show Brendan Malone. The joy comes from the
meeting of Pope Francis with Patriarch Kirill – the first meeting of
the leaders of the Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox churches in
almost 1000 years. The filioque clause mentioned in the show is one
reason for the schism that happened all those centuries ago.
Missionaries of Mercy and the standardising of a date for Easter are
among other topics on this month's show. And beware the Ash Rash.

http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2016/02/05/why-a-meeting-between-the-pope-and-russian-patriarch-is-finally-happening/

Journalism tends to wildly overuse the term "historic", but when it
comes to Friday's announcement that Pope Francis will meet Patriarch
Kirill of Moscow and All Russia on Feb. 12 in Havana, there's simply
no other word for it. It will be the first meeting ever between the
head of the Roman Catholic Church and the spiritual chief of Russian
Orthodoxy. It's a moment for which ecumenical leaders on both sides
have been laboring for decades, and to be honest, many thought they'd
never live to see it...

On a raucous Roman Saturday, Catholic laity keeps growing up
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2016/01/30/242819/

On Saturday, a tidal wave of Italians, the vast majority of them lay
Catholics, flooded Rome's Circus Maximus to oppose a bill before
parliament to create civil unions for gay couples and give them full
adoption rights. From the outside, it may seem like just another
political protest. Seen through a Catholic lens, however, there's
another way of viewing the gathering, which organizers called "Family
Day": It's another stage in the Church's maturation process, as the
Catholic laity keeps growing up...

Pope seems to hint at no sweeping change on divorced, remarried

On Friday, Pope Francis gave his annual address to the judges of the
Roman Rota, the Vatican's main working court, to mark the opening of
the judicial year. Most cases the Rota hears involve petitions for
annulment of a marriage, and the pope was speaking just ahead of a
decision he's expected to make about whether divorced and civilly
remarried Catholics can receive Communion, the hot-button issue of all
hot-button issues at his two Synods of Bishops on the family...

Decoding what it means to say the Vatican has a 'gay lobby'
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2016/01/15/decoding-what-it-means-to-say-the-vatican-has-a-gay-lobby/

Since the Vatican is a global institution, understanding it often
requires at least a passing familiarity with a few foreign languages.
Perhaps the most challenging language is what one might call
"Vaticanese". One recent entry in that lexicon is "gay lobby," which
emerged during the first Vatican leaks scandal under Pope Benedict XVI
in 2012. Here's the confusing thing: When Italians say "gay lobby,"
they don't mean "lobby" in the conventional political sense, and they
often don't really mean "gay" in the sense that sex has much to do
with it ...

Pope Francis is famously a pontiff who seems to be missing an "off"

Catholic/Jewish relations, from a six-day trip to Mexico that includes
a stop at the US border, to a jam-packed schedule for his jubilee Year
of Mercy, the opening part of the year promises to be full of drama...
