MPs consider dropping God, Queen from prayer
MPs may soon no longer seek the guidance from God or make references to the Queen or Jesus Christ in the daily prayer that opens Parliament. Politicians are being consulted on the wording of the prayer, but that hasn't stopped new Speaker Trevor Mallard from opening Parliament this week in te reo Maori with words that translate to "Almighty God", before dropping references to the Queen and Jesus Christ.

A Catholic priest is counting his blessings after he walked away from a serious car crash which totalled his car. About 10am on October 31, Father Freddie Barte was driving home to Waitara, north Taranaki, along State Highway 3A  after attending a church service in Inglewood.

The Catholic bishops in India joined with the country's National Council of Churches to institute Dalit Liberation Sunday every second Sunday of November. The former "untouchables" have suffered discrimination for centuries, but those who are Christians suffer additional marginalization, as well as losing eligibility for government assistance programs available to other Dalits.

** New Zealand Bishops welcome statement on translations of liturgical text (26 Oct 2017)

During our recent meeting in Wellington, we discussed Magnum Principium (the great principle), Pope Francis' September 2017 edict concerning the translations of liturgical texts. The Holy Father has shifted the responsibility of liturgical translations from a Vatican department back to national Conferences of Bishops. Thus he has reaffirmed the teaching of the Second Vatican Council which states that it is local groupings of Bishops who oversee then approve translations into the language of the land, before seeking final acceptance of this work by the Holy See...

** Gender inclusive language (27 Oct 2017; first published in 1997)

The issue of inclusive language arises because of a change taking place in the English language. Only a few years ago it was commonly considered that women as well as men were included when we referred to ourselves as "sons", "brothers", "men" and "he".   Even the earliest English translation of the Second Vatican Council documents still used that language. But language changes, and we are increasingly aware that women no longer feel included by these words...

The Reformation was a time of conflict and challenge. 500 years on there is still healing and hurt between Christians and it is good for Catholics to acknowledge this anniversary and revisit some of the history.

Kings Arms Tavern owner Maureen Gordon has died at age 86
The owner of the Kings Arms tavern Maureen Gordon has died at age 86, after more than 30 years as its publican. Gordon sold the legendary Auckland music venue for $7.4 million in December, but had organised to hold onto it until March saying she wanted play it out in style. The Kings Arms was lauded as one of Auckland's best live music venues, but the new owners planned to demolish the 19th century pub in favour of apartments.

Pope Francis has acknowledged the inadequate response to the scourge of clerical sexual abuse, saying the Church was too late to recognise the gravity of the situation. The Pacific bishops are trying to avoid being too late to support the local economies and a New Zealand-born Australian bishop wants to make sure it's not too late to reach people's hearts and minds via social media. If that fails, the power of music and the Eucharist might work — or at least that's maybe what some Colombian worshippers concluded. Pope Francis said on Friday that in societies where profit is allowed to be the only concern, "democracy tends to become a plutocracy, where inequality and the exploitation of the planet grows." Pope Francis said Saturday that a "eugenic tendency" to suppress the "unborn with some imperfection" is the product of a "narcissistic and utilitarian vision." A mentality of "rejection" prevails, as if people with disabilities weren't capable of being happy, the pontiff said, addressing participants at an international conference on catechesis for people with disabilities.
