The bishops from around the Pacific have gathered for a major meeting, with climate change among the key topics on the agenda. On the other side of the world, Pope Francis has again found himself having to explain comments he made in a media interview, this time on homosexuality and sin. Things appeared a little clearer in Australia, for a gathering of people focused on parish renewal, and in Nigeria, where a cardinal has tried to share the secrets of the country's high Mass attendance. Church call to action as Pacific nations face 'life or death' struggle to survive climate change
BRISBANE Archbishop Mark Coleridge will join dozens of Church leaders from across Oceania for a five-day meeting in Fiji, with a clear agenda to help small Pacific Island nations struggling to survive climate change. Archbishop Coleridge said he was going "first of all as a gesture of solidarity, secondly to listen, and thirdly to ask how we can in Australia can pitch in to help". "Action is required because it is life or death for them," Archbishop Coleridge said as Australian bishops prepared for the meeting in Suva. The Federation of Catholic Bishops Conferences of Oceania from February 5-10 will bring together the bishops' conferences of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea/Solomon Islands and the Pacific Islands to reflect on and pray about their shared mission in the region.

Plain racism: why did Marist Brothers pay out less to Fijian victims than Kiwis?
For 40 years, Jerry Cataki was silent. But when he spoke up last year about the horrific abuse he suffered at the hands of two New Zealand religious brothers at his primary school in Suva, Fiji, he was offered just a fraction of the compensation a Kiwi survivor would receive.

Praying for a good price: 120-year-old Catholic church for sale
The impending sale of a 120-year-old Catholic Church in rural South Canterbury "typifies what has happened throughout rural areas", according to life-long parishoner Jim Anderson. "My father was 9 the day it was opened [in 1903]," the 85-year-old farmer said of the St Andrews Church in the St Andrews township, about 18km south of Timaru.

A new dawn and new era for college
As a new day dawned over Trinity Catholic College, it was hoped the first rays of light also marked the start of a new chapter for the troubled Dunedin high school. About 20 pupils, survivors of sexual abuse, and members of the community gathered at the school at 5am on Saturday for a blessing to mark the start of the first school year under its new name. The new name was chosen following an inquiry last year which concluded that the late Bishop John Kavanagh, after whom the college was named, did not act on a complaint of abuse when he was Bishop of Dunedin from 1957 to 1985.
