Visual artist Jim Allen dies, aged 100
Visual artist and Arts Foundation "icon" Jim Allen has died, aged 100. One of his most significant works was the Futuna Chapel in Karori, Wellington. Built in 1961, its coloured Perspex windows, 14 Stations of the Cross and modernist "light modulators" have led it to being described as one of New Zealand's unique pieces of architecture.

Episode 186 — Compact, College, (New) Caledonia, Cardinal, Christians (June 18, 2023)

This month's show is anything but compact, but we start with news of a Vatican compact on the family, encouraging its flourishing in society. In the Pacific, Catholic education is growing in New Zealand, but has been under threat in New Caledonia. Sadly, the US is grappling with more gun violence, but a cardinal has proposed a possible way forward. Some might say he's dreaming, but what might he be dreaming about? Researchers are trying to find out — well, maybe not the cardinal's dreams, but the dreams of Christians. Join Cam, Don, Gavin and James for this month's trip around the world.

NZ CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

NZCBC on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CatholicNZ/

DEAR READERS: For some reason, I can only access the NZCBC Facebook page indirectly through Google's cache - hence the funny look - and one day behind:
https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:a-Nvve7O3K8J:https://www.facebook.com/CatholicNZ/&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=nz

** The Wellington-based Sisters of Compassion have decided to re-elect their current leadership team: Sister Margaret Anne Mills, Sister Sue Cosgrove, Sister 'Alisi Tu'ipulotun and Sister Lusiana Raratini.

** Caritas YCC Day is on June 30 for all Catholic schools across Aotearoa NZ. Our bishops are excited about the event and the possibility of us all joining in solidarity to support Oecusse School in Timor-Leste.

** 24 May is the feast day of Our Lady Help of Christians. To celebrate, tamariki from St Joseph's School in Opotiki sing Mo Maria in their next-door parish church - Our Lady Help of Christians.

** Attention parish liturgy groups! The National Liturgy Office has four current web pages with resources for: •21 May: Solemnity of the Ascension •21-28 May: Week of Prayer for Christian Unity •21-28 May: Laudato si' week •28 May: Pentecost Sunday.

If you're looking for a list of the countries in the Pacific, you've come to the right place as the panel discusses the Oceania Bishops' response to the Synod of Bishops working document, Enlarge the Space of Your Tent. The Oceania response uncovered differences between the countries as they prepare for the Synod assemblies, which will have a more diverse membership than ever before. Diversity appears to be an issue for one Australian government, though, as it moves to take over a Catholic hospital, while in New Zealand it's time for some semblance of retirement for Cardinal John Dew. That should give him more time to spend on Instagram, maybe keeping up with Sr Elizabete, the myth-busting nun in Brazil.
