NEW ZEALAND CATHOLIC PRESS

Hold your breath because we are *that* close to seeing the 'NZ Catholic' newspaper's Web site come alive again with regular stories from each fortnightly issue, complete with related links as before. I will let you all know as soon as the new pages appear, hopefully on Monday.

In the meantime, here are the online articles from the October issue of 'The Far East', the monthly magazine of the New Zealand and Australian branch of St Columban's Missionary Society, at: http://www.columban.org.au/TFE/TrevorTrotter/FarEast.htm

Editorial: 'Called to be Missionary' "One of the marks of a vibrant Christian community is its desire to reach out to others to share with them the riches of its faith and life. Colomban missionaries are witnesses to the generosity of the Church in Australia and New Zealand which continues to send men and women to bring the Good News of God's kingdom to those who have not heard of Jesus Christ ..."

Brazil: 'Rosalia' "When Rosalia went to claim the body of her son, Juliano, the author, Fr Vincent McCarthy, accompanied her. He tells of the subhuman existence of internal migrants like Rosalia and her son in Latin America’s biggest city and the harsh life that children on the streets of São Paulo are destined to endure ..."

Peru: 'Meal fit for a Flintstone' "Llama trains, broken bridges, flooded rivers, guinea pig stews, fleas in every bodily nook and cranny. These are just some of the surprises He springs on me every time I visit the outlying hamlets of the parish of Huasahuasi, located high in the Peruvian Andes ..."

Pakistan: 'A Place for Prayer' Representatives of the Muslim community were delighted to attend the blessing of the foundation stone of the village church in Khorkhaki Mullian, 100kms west of Lahore, Pakistan. The Mulvi (Muslim religious leader) prayed with us and everyone, Muslims and Christians, was given the opportunity to address the villagers who gathered for the occasion..."

EDUCATION

At the Catholic Schools' Jubilee Convention last month, one of the keynote speakers was Dr Denis McLaughlin on "The Catholic School on the threshold of the Third Millennium". Dr M has been involved in Catholic education for over 30 years as a primary, secondary and tertiary educator, a principal and a DRS. He is at present Associate Professor of the School of Educational Leadership at the Australian Catholic University. Wel-com newspaper published an edited version of his 20-page address and I have put a copy of it on the 'kiwicath' Web site with added links to some of the documents he referred to.

Any member of our forum should be able to open the copy by clicking on: http://www.egroups.com/files/kiwicath/schoolsconv.txt but if that doesn't work and you would like a copy, e-mail me -leon@xtra.co.nz

As the local press is often a bit light on stories of Catholic interest, starting this week I will include an article or two from the overseas secular press which I think might interest New Zealand readers.

'Young enterprise students hit on a winner' The Press (Christchurch) 10 October 2000 http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,422418a1936,FF.html There's no excuse for getting caught without your driver's licence, thanks to Catholic Cathedral College's entry for the Young Enterprise Scheme ...

[Review of 'Mister, are you a priest?', the autobiography of the bishop of (London)Derry Dr Edward Daly] The Irish Times ; 10-Oct-2000 http://scripts.ireland.com/search/highlight.plx?TextRes=edward%20near%20daly&Pat\ h=/newspaper/features/2000/1010/features2.htm This is a remarkable book. Frank, fresh, and unfettered by the politic, whether secular or ecclesiastic; it is also a rare insight into the life of an Irish bishop. What will have the most impact on readers is his graphic and unequivocal recollection of Bloody Sunday ...

NEWS OF THE GREAT JUBILEE
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/jubilee/news.html

Our Jubilee News page has links to preliminary reports about three 'Jubilees within the Jubilee' coming up soon: the Jubilees of bishops (Oct. 6-8); of Families (Oct. 14-15); and of Catholic converts (Nov.9).

The Jubilee of Converts is being organized by a body called 'The Path to Rome' which also happens to be the title of a book by Dwight Longenecker. It's a collection of personal testimonies by converts about their individual "Path to Rome". They include former Anglican bishops, a vicar's wife, a woman Salvation Army officer, former Anglo-Catholics, Plymouth Brethren, an American fundamentalist, and members of the Church of Scotland, American Presbyterian and Evangelical Anglican Churches and the New Age movement. The author has published an essay on the Internet - at: http://www.christendom-awake.org/pages/dlongene/introptr.html - which is partly a promotion for the book, but mostly it's a fascinating discussion of the benefits which converts of Evangelical background bring to the Catholic Church and about new possibilities for cooperation between Evangelical Christians and Catholics.

FROM THE NZ SECULAR PRESS

(You can open links to world news of religion in the secular press on the bishops' News page at: http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/news/frnews.html )

WARNING: The film 'The Exorcist', probably due for re-release here at the end of the year, is very definitely a movie only for the strongest of stomachs, as this review makes abundantly clear. I have included this link and extract from a review in the Herald only because there's nothing else to report this week and because the changes to the original film are significant from the Catholic point of view.

"Exorcist" given extra twist"
NZ Herald 26.09.2000
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?storyID=152741

Warner Brothers' new version of 'The Exorcist' contains scenes originally cut by (the Director, William) Friedkin, who had a private battle raging with William Peter Blatty, the author of the novel on which the film was based ... Apparently Blatty, a devout Catholic, wanted to impart a clear message of good prevailing over evil with theological overtones. Friedkin wanted viewers to reach their own conclusions ... One of the added scenes, in which the younger priest asks the older priest why Satan would harm an innocent little girl, Blatty considered pivotal and fought in vain to keep in the final cut. The older priest replies that Satan has only one purpose: "The point is to see ourselves as animal and ugly ... to reject the possibility that God could love us." .......

NZ CATHOLIC PRESS
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/press/frpress.html

The 'NZ Catholic' home page is still displaying stories from the July 30 issue, the last pages I composed. I think old "news" is the saddest sight on the Internet.

I have written to the editors of 'Wel-com' and 'NZ Catholic' newspapers and 'Tui Motu InterIslands' magazine, offering to put a note on their Web sites for the benefit of visitors, explaining that the sites are -or are not - going to be updated with fresh items in the near future. Sorry to say, I have practically nothing to report as a result. I don't want to risk being regarded as a pest, so I guess I have to leave it there.

But that's not to say that regular readers of the three publications should be silent. On the contrary, please write to the editors yourselves from time to time, pointing out that interesting frequently-updated Web sites are essential to attract people to the Catholic Internet pages, and if our sites 'go dead' people will loose interest, wasting the Internet apostolate's unique opportunity for evangelisation. The editors' email addresses are: 'NZ Catholic': catholic@iconz.co.nz 'Wel-com': mvpryor@paradise.net.nz 'Tui Motu InterIslands': tuimotu@earthlight.co.nz

40,000 pilgrims - most over them older than 60 - came to Rome for the Jubilee of the Elderly on 18 September. They were so enthusiastic that Pope John Paul, who is normally reluctant to admit he is getting old, started talking about "we, the elderly". There's a link to a fresh report about the event on the bishops' Jubilee News page.
