Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

The Vatican's changing relationship with Europe
Last Friday, I was in Washington, for a symposium on "Religion and Public
Life in Europe" sponsored by the National Intelligence Council. The event
brought together a number of prominent academic and policy analysts -- plus
one plebian journalist -- to ponder religious trends in Europe and what they
might mean for trans-Atlantic relationships. In order to promote free
discussion, the event was off-the-record. I don't think it violates
anybody's trust, however, for me to share what I said, since that part
belongs to me. I was asked to talk about thinking in the Vatican these days
on Europe, and where things might be heading...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

http://ncrcafe.org/node/507

Struggle to reassert traditional Catholic identity scores two wins
In the forty-plus years since the close of the Second Vatican Council
(1962-65), two schools of thought have circled one another in Catholicism
about how to interpret what the council meant. For lack of a better
vocabulary, what we might call the "change" school sees Vatican II as a
significant innovation in Catholic life, ushering in a new period of reform
in liturgy, doctrine, and pastoral practice. The "continuity" school instead
stresses a smooth continuum between Vatican II and previous councils...

Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

The Church's search for an environmental stand
Catholic environmentalism these days seems to be an instinct in search of a
cause. One can find impressive traces of awareness, from John Paul II's 1990
call for "ecological conversion," to grass-roots initiatives such as the
Genesis Farm founded by the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell, N.J. Yet so far
no single defining moment has come along to crank up Catholic activism in a
way that changes the social and political equation...

meaning of the cross in the life of every Christian. The welcome of the

The case for despair these days in Christian/Muslim relations is
depressingly easy to make. June isn't even over, but so far this month has
seen the following anti-Christian incidents in majority Muslim areas ...

Parliamentary prayer will survive unchanged
http://www.spcm.org/Journal/spip.php?article12248
Auckland, NZ â€" While the debate on abolishing or changing the prayer recited
each day in New Zealand’s Parliament when it is sitting has turned into a
political dead duck, interesting issues are emerging from beneath the debris
of debate...

Parliament's Christian prayer won't be changed
http://nz.news.yahoo.com/070615/3/n0r.html
The Christian prayer which starts each sitting of Parliament is not going to
be changed, Speaker Margaret Wilson said tonight.

Inevitably those who reach the 100-year mark and beyond are asked the secret
of their longevity. Witarina Harris's secret was her tranquility, her
ability to put others at ease, her wonderful sense of humour and her wicked
grin, Father Michael Aherne told the many who came to Tamatekapua meeting
house to farewell her yesterday...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

http://ncrcafe.org/node/507

Theologians challenged to set the pace for inclusive conversations
It's the nature of my job that I attend far too many conferences. Over the
course of a decade reporting on "all things Catholic," I've sat through
thousands of papers, lectures and keynote speeches, in various languages and
on various continents. Even measured against that volume of material,
however, the Daniel Finn's presidential address June 10 at the annual
Catholic Theological Society of America convention ranks as one of the most
impressive presentations I've ever heard...

Cross travels from Ground Zero to Aramoana
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/1/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10444469
It's not the Olympic torch, but for young Catholics the Cross has the same
significance. The 4m-high wooden Cross, a gift from the late Pope John Paul
II to the youth of the world in 1984, has travelled through Asia, Europe,
America and even Ground Zero - the site of 9/11 - as part of the build-up to

Editorial: Prayer too much of a sacred cow
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/topic/story.cfm?c_id=500818&objectid=10443798
Parliament's prayer is now unlikely to be removed, or de-Christianised. The
Prime Minister has seen to that with an emphatic distancing of herself and
her Government from the Speaker's survey of MPs on both possibilities. In
the tradition of Pontius Pilate, she has washed her hands of this matter.
National's John Key also sees no reason for change so the chances of a
crusade against the prayer are over, for now...

Is now the time to beatify and canonize Pope Pius XII?
I want to float a counter-intuitive idea this week, which is that from the
point of view of Catholic-Jewish relations, the best thing the Vatican could
do right now would be to beatify and canonize Pope Pius XII immediately...

Sorting out the results of the Latin American bishops' meeting
Evaluating an event with the scale and complexity of the Fifth General
Conference of the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean (CELAM) is
inevitably an exercise in selective perception. To some extent, it comes
down to whether one is inclined to see the glass as half-full, or
half-empty...
