Telling Africa's story; the Coptic Kristallnacht; latest Dall'Oglio rumors
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/telling-africas-story-coptic-kristallnacht-latest-dalloglio-rumors
Any Western journalist who's spent time in Africa knows the usual
reaction when a local bumps into one of us: "Why don't you report any
good news about Africa? Can't you find something to talk about beyond
Africans starving or killing each other?"
There's also a Catholic version of the complaint: "Can't you do any
story about the church in Africa other than condoms and AIDS?" ...

It's hard to believe that it's six years since The 15th Station sprung
into life in a small office in Auckland, but the crew invites SQPN
legend Steve Nelson into Rendition Studios to share in the birthday
celebration. The remarkable events of World Youth Day in Rio, and the
subsequent unremarkable comments on the flight back that generated
headlines around the world, dominate this month's episode. James, Don,
Shannon, Steve and Gavin also talk about Lumen Fidei, the joint
Francis/Benedict encyclical, a doctor who has an interesting

An American makes the pope's lineup, and Christians in Syria and Egypt
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/american-makes-pope-s-lineup-and-christians-syria-and-egypt
Changes in administrations always trigger a game of musical chairs,
and it's well underway in the Vatican right now. Cardinal Tarcisio
Bertone, Benedict XVI's Secretary of State, is on his way out, while
Archbishop Georg Gänswein, though still running the papal household,
is no longer the pope's go-to guy. One figure navigating the
transition to Francis quite nicely, however, is a key American insider
under Benedict too: Msgr. Peter Wells, who holds the critical job of
assessor in the Secretariat of State...

Mass Catholic mass in Palmerston North (full text)
http://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/news/8999580/Mass-Catholic-mass-in-Palmerston-North
More than 2000 Catholics from Manawatu and Tararua area are expected
to congregate for a "Year of Faith" mass at Arena Manawatu in
Palmerston North tomorrow. Former Pope Benedict asked Catholics around
the world to mark 2013 as a year to celebrate and re-energise their
faith. Bishop Charles Drennan, who leads the Catholic Community in
Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu and Hawkes Bay, has invited people from
nine churches to assemble for hymns from 10am, with the Mass beginning
at 10.30am.

In most respects, Alitalia flight 4001 from Rio de Janeiro to Rome on

class were fairly uncomfortable, and the main course was a lukewarm
square of lasagna roughly the size of a Ritz cracker.
I'll say this for it, however: The in-flight entertainment was spectacular...

Mass Catholic mass in Palmerston North (full text)
http://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/news/8999580/Mass-Catholic-mass-in-Palmerston-North
More than 2000 Catholics from Manawatu and Tararua area are expected
to congregate for a "Year of Faith" mass at Arena Manawatu in
Palmerston North tomorrow. Former Pope Benedict asked Catholics around
the world to mark 2013 as a year to celebrate and re-energise their
faith. Bishop Charles Drennan, who leads the Catholic Community in
Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu and Hawkes Bay, has invited people from
nine churches to assemble for hymns from 10am, with the Mass beginning
at 10.30am.

St Gerard's Monastery, standing proud above Oriental Parade, is
unquestionably one of Wellington's landmark buildings. It is also a
liability that could fall over in a significant earthquake, and will
cost millions of dollars to be brought up to an acceptably safe
standard.

In most respects, Alitalia flight 4001 from Rio de Janeiro to Rome on
Sunday night was nothing to write home about. The seats in economy
class were fairly uncomfortable, and the main course was a lukewarm
square of lasagna roughly the size of a Ritz cracker.
I'll say this for it, however: The in-flight entertainment was spectacular...

Sister Loyola Galvin, from the Home of Compassion in the Wellington
suburb of Island Bay, was named national NZ Gardener of the Year 2008
by NZ Gardener magazine, and interviewed twice on the programme in
2008. Filmmaker Jess Feast was inspired by those interviews to make a
documentary film about Sister Loyola, Gardening With Soul, which
receives its world premiere in Wellington on 27 July at the 2013 New

Underway right now is the first comprehensive census of churches in
this country since early last century. The Mission Koru Report expects
to reveal a surprising growth in the number of churches and an
emerging diversity in both denominations and ethnicity. Associate
Professor Peter Lineham of Massey University is one of the researchers
behind the census and the author of articles on the history of the
Christian church in New Zealand. He discusses history, methodology and
changing paradigms with Spiritual Outlook producer Justin Gregory, who
asks him whether the census will reveal more about New Zealander than
just our church-going habits:

Father Tony Alex was not in the best place to ride out the big one. St
Gerard's Monastery is famous, beautiful – and earthquake-prone. Many
millions would be needed to bring it up to standard, as the building's
owners had warned only recently. But when the 6.5 magnitude earthquake
struck at 5.09pm on Sunday, St Gerard's ''didn't sway much at all'',
says Father Tony, the priest at

I'm in Rio de Janeiro this week, watching Francis wow Brazil. The trip
has brought a little bit of everything: crowds so pumped up for the
pope they created security nightmares, protestors pushed back with
tear gas (they were mad at the government, not so much the pope),
Francis at his pastoral best at the Marian shrine of Aparecida, and a
powerful message of solidarity with the poor in a Rio slum. The mere
fact Francis is out of town, however, doesn't mean his problems in
Rome have taken a vacation...

Conception Catholic Church has stood for almost 100 years at its
present site on Taui St, but was closed by the Catholic Church and was

Station XV: Episode 70 — Pastors, princes and Pope Francis (July 15 2013)
With the panel down on numbers and an early recording date, it's a
more concise episode of The 15th Station this month as James and Gavin
discuss some of the big stories of the month, including Pope Francis's
desire for bishops to be more pastor than prince, the idea of the
Church reclaiming the word "matrimony" as marriage is redefined in
various jurisdictions and we take a look at the first meeting of
arguably the two most important Christian leaders in the world — Pope
Francis and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Francis in Brazil and a new scandal in Rome
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/francis-risks-brazil-and-new-scandal-rome
Let's be clear: Francis' first overseas trip July 22-29 to Brazil for
World Youth Day almost certainly will be perceived as a runaway hit.
He'll likely draw large and enthusiastic crowds, his freewheeling and
warm style should play as well on the road as it does in Rome, and his
palpable concern for the poor should strike deep chords in a society
where social justice is an idée fixe. That said, every papal trip is a
journey into the unknown, and Francis faces some real risks on this
outing, a few immediate and short-term, others longer-term and harder
to evaluate amid the euphoria...
