Playin' church with Francis; the 'Bergoglio of Saskatchewan'; and Iraq
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/playin-church-francis-bergoglio-saskatchewan-and-iraq
No matter where one stands on the spectrum of reaction Francis has
elicited, from the most enthusiastic to the most ambivalent, it's
undeniable he's got the world's attention. In theory, that should
represent a boon to the new evangelization, the effort to relight the
church's missionary fires that became Catholicism's highest internal
priority under Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI. One reliable
method for squandering the momentum, however, would be to divert it
into the church's internal battles...

Using categories made famous by Joseph Nye, the United States is the
world's leading "hard power" and the Vatican among its most
influential "soft powers." In that light, one way of defining the role
of a U.S. ambassador to the Holy See is getting these two superpowers
in sync on shared humanitarian concerns: feeding the hungry, fighting
poverty, curbing war, fostering dialogue, and so on. If that's the
job, there's a strong case that few people ever have been more

Station XV: Episode 73 — Interviews, intervention and interlocution
(October 15, 2013)
It was one of the most newsworthy moments of Pope Francis's
pontificate — the interview heard around the world. When the Holy
Father sat down with fellow Jesuit priest Fr Antonio Spadaro, the two
discussed a wide range of topics, and much of what was spoken about
became water-cooler conversation around the world. James, Don and
Gavin chat about that interview, Pope Francis's intervention to save
lives in Argentina a couple of decades ago and Pope Benedict's
decision to write a letter to a journalist who had questioned the
former Pope's efforts to combat abuse. Those stories and more in this
month's episode of The 15th Station.

Germany; Lefebvrists; papal cold calls; Legionaries; and Lampedusa
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/germany-lefebvrists-papal-cold-calls-legionaries-and-lampedusa
Over the centuries, the first tremors of earthquakes in Catholicism
often have been felt in Germany. That nation gave birth to the
Protestant Reformation, and it was also where the theological energies
that erupted in the Second Vatican Council began to swirl.
Given that history, it's worth casting an eye on Germany these days
to track the fallout of the "Francis effect." Two recent storylines
are intriguing in that regard...

by Pope Francis to advise him on the reform of the Roman Curia, the
central government of the Catholic Church. The cardinal is in New
Zealand to consult our bishops on the project. Here's a taster of Kim
Hill's style:
Kim: Why did you choose the Church?
Cardinal: To choose the Church is a call from Jesus Christ.
Kim: How did he get in touch with you?
Opinion: Pope Francis is revolutionising Church
http://www.stuff.co.nz/timaru-herald/opinion/comment/9255100/Pope-Francis-is-revolutionising-Church
The Pope is not everyone's idea of someone we should pay heed to and
in general terms, the secular or irreligious world sees him as merely
a figurehead for something it neither understands nor cares to
understand. However, Pope Francis is changing that and in papal terms,
at a staggering pace...

Legalising euthanasia or assisted suicide would be bad for New Zealand
(26 Sep 2013)
While the decision by Labour MP Maryan Street to withdraw her
Euthanasia Bill from the Members Ballot today is welcomed, we
understand that it arises from purely political motives – a wish to
avoid a controversial debate in an election year – rather than out of
concern for the dangerous social consequences of such a Bill ...

Diplomats; atheists; Newark, N.J.; and the war on Christians
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/diplomats-atheists-newark-nj-and-war-christians
A pope plays many roles, one being the premier ambassador for
Catholicism (and religion generally) on the global stage. In a sense,
it requires the art of diplomacy: reaching across divides, finding
ways to communicate with people who don't speak your language, and
emphasizing common ground rather than drawing lines in the sand.
Francis has shown himself to be awfully good at that part of the job,
which may help explain why he seems increasingly inclined to turn to
churchmen with a strong diplomatic background to fill his
administration's key slots...

It's 120 years since women won the right to vote in New Zealand. For
institutions like the Anglican and Catholic churches, however, events
barely more than a century old can seem perilously fashionable as they
consider women's place among the clergy.

A pope for the Catholic middle; countdown to the G-8
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/pope-catholic-middle-countdown-g-8
Having spent the early part of this week in Australia and New Zealand,
I'm arriving today in Rome, where the buzz is about Pope Francis'
blockbuster interview with 16 Jesuit publications around the world ...
Standing back from the details, what seems clear -- not just from the
interview, but from the balance of the pope's first six months -- is
that the election of Francis in March did not just signify the rise of
the first pope from the developing world or a rejection of patterns of
business management in the Vatican held responsible for the leaks
scandal and other meltdowns. Perhaps most fundamentally, it
represented a breakthrough victory for the Catholic middle ...

Station 15: Episode 72 — Special prayers, special appointment, special
guest (September 16, 2013)
Four years after his last appearance, Father Roderick Vonhogen returns
to Rendition Studios for this month's episode of The 15th Station.
Along with James, Shannon and Gavin, topics for discussion include
Pope Francis leading a day of prayer and fasting for Syria, the Holy
Father's appointment of a new secretary of state and efforts in New
Zealand to address youth unemployment. Two religious orders kissing
and making up and the papal "selfie" are also on the list of topics.
Enjoy the show — and tell you friends about The 15th Station :)

http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/pope-catholic-middle-countdown-g-8
Having spent the early part of this week in Australia and New Zealand,
I'm arriving today in Rome, where the buzz is about Pope Francis'
blockbuster interview with 16 Jesuit publications around the world ...
