Given the through-the-looking-glass dynamic of the media today,
everything Pope Francis says or does is defined as news, however hard
it may be to pin down what it means and however often he may have said
or done precisely the same thing before. Thus a short talk Francis
gave to an Italian women's center on Saturday made headlines, in this
case because of what he said about women in the church...

$359m investment in schools

An extra $359 million will be invested into New Zealand education over
the next four years to lift the achievement of students. Prime
Minister John Key made the announcement in his first speech of the
year when he also introduced new key roles in a hope of "keeping good
teachers in the classroom". But not everyone is sold on the idea.
More schools get fast broadband
http://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/news/9641001/More-schools-get-fast-broadband
More Manawatu schools have joined the roll call for free, fast
internet and just in time for school to start next week. Palmerston
North's St Peter's College was one of the first to be named as part of
the package last year, with deputy principal Jon Bowen welcoming the
inclusion, saying free fibre and faster internet offered more
educational opportunities.

The CEO of Hawke's Bay Cricket Association, Craig Findlay, has come
under attack after scoring a blistering 307 retired from 115 balls
against a schoolboy bowling attack last weekend. Findlay, who smashed
27 sixes in his innings for his Complete Flooring Napier Technical Old

feat as outraged parents, players and fans questioned his motive in
the division one match against the St John's College First XI team at

Station XV: Episode 76 — Holy Land, Catholic School, Religious House
(January 16, 2014)
We burst into the new year with the great news that Pope Francis, who
was apparently a real drawcard in his first 10 months as leader of the
world's Catholics, will make a trip to the Holy Land and Jordan this
year in the latest peace mission from a Pope. James, Lucy, Don and
Gavin also talk about Catholic education — who it's for and who it
should be for — as well as the 6.6 million people who attended papal
events since Pope Francis's election, the expulsion of a priest from
the Jesuits and the latest round of secularist antagonism, this time
against the Ten Commandments. All in a busy episode of The 15th
Station.

Cricket: Schoolboys left reeling in knock from CEO
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/hawkes-bay-today/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503462&objectid=11186155
The CEO of Hawke's Bay Cricket Association, Craig Findlay, has come
under attack after scoring a blistering 307 retired from 115 balls
against a schoolboy bowling attack last weekend. Findlay, who smashed
27 sixes in his innings for his Complete Flooring Napier Technical Old
Boys (NTOB), was last night having second thoughts about his mammoth
feat as outraged parents, players and fans questioned his motive in
the division one match against the St John's College First XI team at
Nelson Park, Napier, on Saturday.

Some of Nelson's youngest inquiring minds and science enthusiasts are
spending this week in the science lab, but the teachers are not who
you would expect. Run by a group called Ministry of Inspiration,
talented Garin and Waimea College students have been teaching kids
from all over the region in a week-long science or computer camp.

Taranaki's Scott Murfitt is sprinting to the top of his sport - surf
lifesaving. He's one of the fastest beach sprinters in New Zealand and
he has his sights set high. Murfitt - who was head boy in his final
year at New Plymouth's Francis Douglas Memorial College in 2013 - has
been running on sand all his life.

Station.

Known as the people's pope, Francis has captured the imaginations of

distinguishes Pope Francis from other leaders such as Adolf Hitler,

The clergy trade; Melady; pope-watch; and The Boston Globe
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/clergy-trade-melady-pope-watch-and-boston-globe
Pope Francis recently issued a blunt warning about what he called a
"novice trade" within religious orders these days, quoting a line from
the Filipino bishops and deliberately using an Italian term that
evokes memories of the slave trade. Such situations, however, are only
a small piece of a much bigger picture, which is a growing migration
of priests and religious in the Catholic church from the "global
south" to the north, despite the fact that the overall Catholic
population is shifting in precisely the opposite direction. To discuss
the promise and peril of this broader "trade" in clergy, I turned to
Philip Jenkins of Baylor University, one of the English-speaking
world's leading experts on global Christianity...

Station XV: Episode 75 — Exhortations, Commendations and Affiliations
(December 16, 2013)
Pope Francis continues to dominate headlines around the world — and
discussion on the Station 15 podcast network — with his naming as
Time's Person of the Year and the release of his apostolic exhortation
Evangelii Gaudium. The Church in New Zealand has also been in the
news, with the release of Census data about religious affiliation
showing Catholics the largest Christian denomination for the first
time as "no religion" continues to soar ahead, and the NZ bishops
calling for people to be mindful of their attitude at Christmas, with
love of neighbour taking precedence over consumerism. There's also a
bit of fun around Pope Francis's other end-of-year awards. Happy
Christmas from the team at The 15th Station.

A pope with no down time and an interview with the Vatican's financial reformer
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/pope-no-down-time-and-interview-vaticans-financial-reformer
Not so long ago, the yuletide season at the Vatican meant calm. The
pope and the Curia went into semi-hibernation while hearing Advent
sermons from the Preacher of the Papal Household while the system was
on a basic hiatus, with no real drama rolling out of Rome until well
into January. In the Francis era, however, there's no "off" switch,
which makes me very glad I've been in Rome this week...

Census points to non-religious NZ
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/9501270/Census-points-to-non-religious-NZ
Census 2013 figures released yesterday show any claim to a Christian
majority in New Zealand is shaky, with fewer than 1.9 million people
affiliated with a church, down from more than 2 million in 2006.
Anglicans have taken the biggest hit, losing nearly 100,000 followers,
with the flock dropping to just 459,000. The sharp drop means
Catholicism is, for the first time, New Zealand's most popular
religion, with 492,000 devotees, down from 508,000 in 2006.

Antarctica. Father Brian Fennessy volunteered to spend five weeks at
McMurdo Station as one of the five Catholic priests who work there on
a roster over the summer season. He returned on Thursday.
