Bishops reflect on New Zealand's involvement in Middle East conflict
(20 November 2014)
"While our concern is not only for Catholics, Catholic Syrians and
Iraqis in New Zealand speak to us regularly about their deep concern
for the desperate situation faced by family members in Syria and Iraq
or who have become refugees. These insights about the effects the
actions of ISIS are having on ordinary people are deeply moving" says
Archbishop John Dew, President of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops
Conference...

In 21st century Catholicism, you can't ignore Africa anymore
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2014/11/20/in-21st-century-catholicism-you-cant-ignore-africa-any-more/
It's commonplace to say that the Catholic Church, and the Vatican in
particular, needs to hear the voices of the developing world.
Two-thirds of the planet's 1.2 billion Catholics now live outside the
West, a share that will reach three-quarters by mid-century, and it
seems only fair that those folks claim a seat at the table. Today
we're hearing their voices loud and clear, above all from the 150
million Catholics — and climbing — in Africa, and sometimes it makes
for a bumpy ride...

Welcome to School Report

School Report, set up by Stuff.co.nz in 2012, is an education resource
for parents and others interested in education. National Standards and
National Certificate for Educational Achievement (NCEA) results are
published for every school where the qualifications are used.
Information about the socio-economic background of students, ethnicity
and funding is also included on each school's page. The information is
designed to help readers learn more about a school. It's not possible
to make definitive judgements about any school just by looking at its
page on this site. But on each school's page, there is a link to its
latest assessment by the Education Review Office (ERO). Reading these
reports, as well as visiting and talking to the staff and parents at a
school are good ways of learning more about it.

Catholic divorce debate heats up
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/10664782/Catholic-divorce-debate-heats-up
New Zealand's senior Catholic believes the church is ready to change
its hardline stance on divorcees - something he began lobbying for
almost a decade ago. Archbishop John Dew is among bishops worldwide
pushing for a liberal reform of church rules which ban Catholics who
divorce, then remarry, from taking Communion - effectively excluding
them from church life.

I've got a soft spot for the Pope. I don't know why; I'm about as
religious as a satsuma. But given that Mum's an Anglican preacher, my
Dad's an atheist, my brother a Catholic, and my Aunt and Uncle devout
Jews, I've probably picked up second-hand religious interest
somewhere...

who settled in Pahiatua in 1944 after his family was forced to flee a

http://www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/news/10665328/St-Marys-parish-celebrates-150-years
The first Roman Catholic Mass celebrated in Southland was said by a
French Marist missionary priest who had walked down from Dunedin.
There were no roads or maps, just plenty of bush and swamp. Mass was
offered in a one-room post office. By contrast, yesterday's
sesquicentennial Mass drew 650 people to the Ascot Park hotel, to the
vast space in which they'd enjoyed a banquet the night before.

Will the pope challenge Turkey on anti-Christian bias?
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2014/10/30/will-pope-francis-challenge-turkey-on-anti-christian-bias/
Recently the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis will travel to Turkey
Nov. 28-30, the official purpose for which is largely ecumenical.
He'll visit Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople on the feast of
St. Andrew, considered their patron in much the same way Catholics
regard St. Peter as the first pope. But what's not yet clear is how
much of a push Francis will make on another front: An increasingly
virulent anti-Christian climate in Turkey, which tends to simmer
constantly until it boils over into lethal violence.

It's 70 years since John Roy-Wojciechowski started his new life in New
Zealand. The Howick resident was one of 733 Polish refugee children
who settled in Pahiatua in 1944 after his family was forced to flee a

St Mary's parish celebrates 150 years
http://www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/news/10665328/St-Marys-parish-celebrates-150-years
The first Roman Catholic Mass celebrated in Southland was said by a
French Marist missionary priest who had walked down from Dunedin.
