Episode 121 — Protesting, Praying, Poverty and Poor Choices (November 15, 2017)

The Catholic and Lutheran Churches have marked 500 years since Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of a German cathedral, reflecting on the shared faith and expressing a desire for unity. In the new New Zealand Parliament, there's talk about a reformation of the opening prayer, removing references to God and Jesus Christ. In Rome, Pope Francis will celebrate the first World Day of the Poor with several hundred people living in poverty, while in Wellington, the Sisters of Compassion are waiting for a miracle — or two. And finally a Hollywood star reflects on his hopes that God is a movie fan, but also forgiving of poor role choices. Join Anna, Donald, James and Gavin in this month's episode of The 15th Station.

NZ CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

** New Zealand Bishops welcome statement on translations of liturgical text (26 Oct 2017)

During our recent meeting in Wellington, we discussed Magnum Principium (the great principle), Pope Francis' September 2017 edict concerning the translations of liturgical texts. The Holy Father has shifted the responsibility of liturgical translations from a Vatican department back to national Conferences of Bishops. Thus he has reaffirmed the teaching of the Second Vatican Council which states that it is local groupings of Bishops who oversee then approve translations into the language of the land, before seeking final acceptance of this work by the Holy See...

** Gender inclusive language (27 Oct 2017; first published in 1997)

The issue of inclusive language arises because of a change taking place in the English language. Only a few years ago it was commonly considered that women as well as men were included when we referred to ourselves as "sons", "brothers", "men" and "he".   Even the earliest English translation of the Second Vatican Council documents still used that language. But language changes, and we are increasingly aware that women no longer feel included by these words...

** Why was Pope Francis so quick to answer these 'dubia'?

Given Pope Francis's usual disinclination to answer his critics, it may seem a little puzzling as to why he quickly and publicly responded to Cardinal Robert Sarah about the implications of the pontiff's recent decisions on liturgical translation. The nature of Sarah's position, the pope's readiness to be precise, and his personal investment in the issue may all help explain why Francis appears so ready to reply this time.

NZ CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

Marking 500 years since the Reformation (17 Oct 2017)

The Reformation was a time of conflict and challenge. 500 years on there is still healing and hurt between Christians and it is good for Catholics to acknowledge this anniversary and revisit some of the history.

The 31st of October 2017 marks 500 years since Martin Luther initially wrote his 95 Theses which had a significant impact upon the Catholic Church and the shape of many organisations, ideas and structures that would come to mark the modern era.

This link - http://www.faithcentral.co.nz/classroom/thematic-resources - from the National Centre for Religious Studies (NCRS) is designed to provide opportunities for parishes, as well as schools, with related readings, a Commemoration Prayer Service, PowerPoint and a YouTube video on Catholicism and the Reformation which will be useful to share with your parishioners.

THE FIFTEENTH STATION PODCAST

Episode 120 — Sadness, Solidarity, Social and Celebrity (October 16, 2017)

Tragedy has struck again, this time in Las Vegas, where the local Catholic bishop urged locals and tourists alike to band together in solidarity to support the mourning, the injured and the suffering. Pope Francis has acknowledged the inadequate response to the scourge of clerical sexual abuse, saying the Church was too late to recognise the gravity of the situation. The Pacific bishops are trying to avoid being too late to support the local economies and a New Zealand-born Australian bishop wants to make sure it's not too late to reach people's hearts and minds via social media. If that fails, the power of music and the Eucharist might work — or at least that's maybe what some Colombian worshippers concluded. Enjoy the musings of Anna, Don, James and Gavin in this month's episode.

** Civilize the market' for common good, care of creation, pope says
Pope Francis said on Friday that in societies where profit is allowed to be the only concern, "democracy tends to become a plutocracy, where inequality and the exploitation of the planet grows." The pontiff said political action "must be placed truly at the service of the human person, the common good and respect for nature.

** Pope decries 'eugenic tendency' to eradicate people with disabilities
Pope Francis said Saturday that a "eugenic tendency" to suppress the "unborn with some imperfection" is the product of a "narcissistic and utilitarian vision." A mentality of "rejection" prevails, as if people with disabilities weren't capable of being happy, the pontiff said, addressing participants at an international conference on catechesis for people with disabilities.
