going to be a fairly ordinary luncheon in Blenheim yesterday for
former Awatere and Flaxbourne residents. But the "not-so-staunch"

Named after a Spanish knight ''of great prayer'', Sister Loyola Galvin

Legalising euthanasia or assisted suicide would be bad for New Zealand
(26 Sep 2013)

While the decision by Labour MP Maryan Street to withdraw her
Euthanasia Bill from the Members Ballot today is welcomed, we
understand that it arises from purely political motives – a wish to
avoid a controversial debate in an election year – rather than out of
concern for the dangerous social consequences of such a Bill ...

Diplomats; atheists; Newark, N.J.; and the war on Christians
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/diplomats-atheists-newark-nj-and-war-christians

A pope plays many roles, one being the premier ambassador for
Catholicism (and religion generally) on the global stage. In a sense,
it requires the art of diplomacy: reaching across divides, finding
ways to communicate with people who don't speak your language, and
emphasizing common ground rather than drawing lines in the sand.
Francis has shown himself to be awfully good at that part of the job,
which may help explain why he seems increasingly inclined to turn to
churchmen with a strong diplomatic background to fill his
administration's key slots...

A pope for the Catholic middle; countdown to the G-8
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/pope-catholic-middle-countdown-g-8

Having spent the early part of this week in Australia and New Zealand,
I'm arriving today in Rome, where the buzz is about Pope Francis'
blockbuster interview with 16 Jesuit publications around the world ...
Standing back from the details, what seems clear -- not just from the
interview, but from the balance of the pope's first six months -- is
that the election of Francis in March did not just signify the rise of
the first pope from the developing world or a rejection of patterns of
business management in the Vatican held responsible for the leaks
scandal and other meltdowns. Perhaps most fundamentally, it
represented a breakthrough victory for the Catholic middle ...

Francis at the six-month mark seems a force of nature
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/francis-six-month-mark-seems-force-nature

As it's come to be understood in the 21st century, the papacy is
really an impossible job. A pope is expected to be the CEO of a global

his six-month mark Pope Francis is drawing better reviews on those
five scores than anyone might reasonably have anticipated back on
March 13 ...

In praise of Italy; a painful anniversary in India
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/praise-italy-painful-anniversary-india

So far this year, beating up on Italy has become something of a
fashion statement. Election of a Latin American outsider to the papacy
has been hailed as a long-overdue break with the Vatican's Italian old
guard, while right now political commentators around the world are
aghast that former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi still has a
following despite his conviction for tax fraud.
This week, however, I come to praise Italy, not to bury it...

Telling Africa's story; the Coptic Kristallnacht; latest Dall'Oglio rumors
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/telling-africas-story-coptic-kristallnacht-latest-dalloglio-rumors

Any Western journalist who's spent time in Africa knows the usual
reaction when a local bumps into one of us: "Why don't you report any
good news about Africa? Can't you find something to talk about beyond
Africans starving or killing each other?"
There's also a Catholic version of the complaint: "Can't you do any
story about the church in Africa other than condoms and AIDS?" ...
