little more even, with the building's supporters receiving $38,000

Sir Peter Jackson and wife Fran Walsh have refurbished a
former Catholic chapel in Wellington, which was closed in 2002 due to
earthquake concerns. The Our Lady Star of the Sea Convent Chapel,
built in 1924, is perched on the hillside overlooking Seatoun.

Church strengthening hinges on funding (photo)

Strengthening St Mary of the Angels church in central Wellington is
going to cost about $9.35 million. The French Gothic-style church in
Boulcott St, built in the 1920s, was closed after the 6.5 magnitude
quake on July 21 last year.

Pope Francis vs. critics on sex abuse: Both sides have a point

http://goo.gl/Ncbkfr

In an extended conversation with the Italian paper Corriere della
Sera, the Pope Francis not only vigorously defended the Catholic
church's record on its child sexual abuse scandals, but also
complained that "the church is the only one attacked." While the pope
touched on many other points in the interview, from divorced and
remarried Catholics and birth control to some of the urban myths that
have grown up around him, it was his comments on the abuse scandals
that seemed most destined to spark reaction. It wasn't long in
coming...

Episode 77 -- Il Papa was on Rolling Stone (February 16, 2014)

Pope Francis continues to be a media darling, with Rolling Stone
magazine the latest publication to run a glowing piece on the Pontiff
as he approaches the one-year anniversary of his election. But, as
this article from The Week explains, there were quite a few errors and
exaggerations in the article. Pope Francis has also been in the news
with his appointment of his first group of new cardinals, and he's
also talked of the Internet -- our medium of communicating with the
world -- is a "gift from God". We find it hard to disagree with him.
James, Shannon, Don and Gavin also talk about the death of a New
Zealand bishop and a survey of Catholics in Germany and Switzerland.
Enjoy the show.

The Memorial Park project in Buckle St is good news for a dilapidated
Wellington heritage building. The former Home of Compassion Creche is
empty, boarded up and full of history. The building will get a new
lease of life and a new location in the park, complete with a picket

NZ head of Bethlehem University to speak in Wellington

The New Zealander who heads Bethlehem University in the Occupied
Palestinian Territories, is speaking in Wellington tomorrow about
providing education where curfews, travel restrictions and military
checkpoints are all daily challenges faced by students and staff. Dr
Peter Bray, a De La Salle brother from Auckland, has been
Vice-Chancellor of Bethlehem University - the oldest university in the
West Bank, since 2009.

Hundreds of children took part in the Weet-Bix Kids Tryathlon in
Hamilton yesterday, but the achievement was extra special for one
young swimmer. Sophie Ridgway, 9, couldn't float in water let alone
swim the length of a pool 18 months ago. The St Peter Chanel Catholic
School (Te Rapa) pupil has cerebral palsy, which affects muscle
development and limits movement in her legs.

http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/women-old-guard-pope-v-pope-graffiti-and-all-things-catholic

Given the through-the-looking-glass dynamic of the media today,
everything Pope Francis says or does is defined as news, however hard
it may be to pin down what it means and however often he may have said
or done precisely the same thing before. Thus a short talk Francis
gave to an Italian women's center on Saturday made headlines, in this
case because of what he said about women in the church...

$359m investment in schools
http://www.sunlive.co.nz/news/62897-359m-investment-schools.html
An extra $359 million will be invested into New Zealand education over
the next four years to lift the achievement of students. Prime
Minister John Key made the announcement in his first speech of the
year when he also introduced new key roles in a hope of "keeping good
teachers in the classroom". But not everyone is sold on the idea.

More schools get fast broadband
http://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/news/9641001/More-schools-get-fast-broadband
More Manawatu schools have joined the roll call for free, fast
internet and just in time for school to start next week. Palmerston
North's St Peter's College was one of the first to be named as part of
the package last year, with deputy principal Jon Bowen welcoming the
inclusion, saying free fibre and faster internet offered more
educational opportunities.

Truisms in Catholic life and a rundown of Rome news
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/truisms-catholic-life-and-rundown-rome-news

Trying to impose order on chaos, I'd like to suggest that recent
developments on the Vatican beat are noteworthy not just on their own
merits, but because they illustrate a couple of truisms about Catholic
life that anyone who wants to "get it" vis-Ă -vis the church probably
should master ...
