'NZ CATHOLIC' SPECIAL ISSUE: ' THE LEGACY & HOPE OF VATICAN II '

The 'NZ Catholic' newspaper has published a special issue, on sale today,
commemorating the fortieth anniversary of the end of the Second Vatican
Council (1962-1965). In it, New Zealanders recall their personal experiences
of Vatican II and its aftermath, and overseas writers reflect on the changes
the Council brought about. The issue is illustrated with many photographs
from the era.

From the November issue ...

Refugee service marks 25 years as numbers of stateless grow
The Jesuit Refugee Service is celebrating 25 years in its mission of
accompanying, serving and advocating for the rights of refugees. Its
experiences are documented in two books the JRS has launched to mark this
milestone. The director of JRS International, Fr Lluís Magriñá SJ, told a
press conference last month, the number and scope of the agency’s services
have increased over the years as peoples’ needs have grown. The original
call for refugee services came in 1980, from the father general of the
Society of Jesus, Fr Pedro Arrupe. It was in response to the plight of
Vietnamese boat people....

Waimea West church 150 years old
The little Catholic Church at Waimea West Nelson is celebrating its 150th
jubilee next month, making it one of the oldest churches in New Zealand. In
June 1852, Fr Antoine Garin of Nelson applied to the government for land to
build a church at Waimea West and two acres were granted. Subsequently
Waimea West Catholics received 79 pounds as their share of trust funds for
religious purposes. Three hundred pounds was also raised from the community
and the church was completed at the end of 1855...

Spiritual balm for faith community nurses
The holistic nature of faith community nursing was highlighted for 36
delegates at a recent conference on the subject with the exploration of a
range of topics from care of the aged to spiritual aspects of mental illness
and historical biblical models. The New Zealand Faith Community Nurses
Association (NZFCNA) conference theme, fresh balm for future practice,
underpinned the event's spiritual concepts of healing balm mingled with
practical nursing issues....

Jason lunches with the Pope
When World Youth Day volunteer, Jason Mackiewicz, had lunch with the pope,
and 11 other young adult representatives he was overwhelmed by the symbolism
of the event. Here they were, these disciples, ‘breaking bread’ with the
Church’s leader and one other, the German Bishops’ Conference delegate,
Bishop Bode. Another point of significance for today’s Church might have
been the fact that there were women as well as men among the diners. Jason
says it was a tremendously spiritual moment for him, being in such a small
group and spending an hour and a half with a pope who came across as a
humble servant, a listener...

World Youth Day - back to the future
Wellington’s pilgrimage started long before our feet left NZ soil (Archdio.
pilgrimage prep nights, an ANZAC Day dawn parade, individual reflections and
18 months of fundraisers); long before we followed St Paul’s footsteps
through Turkey; long before we followed the footsteps of the more than 13
million other young adults who have pilgrimaged to World Youth Day since
1984. The same could be said for the parishes of Germany that spent just as
long preparing for us to come to them for the Days of Encounter. And so,
rather than raving about Turkey, Greece or Germany; the 95 Kiwis (30 of them
from Wellington); the tranquillity of Gallipoli; star-gazing with and waking
up among 1.2 million others; crowd-stopping hakas; seeing the pope or salad
in a can, I want to talk about a town called Siegen....

Pope: Dei Verbum, a central feature of Vatican Council II and of the Church
http://www.asianews.it/view.php?l=en&art=4547
Vatican City (AsiaNews) â€" Addressing thousands of pilgrims gathered in St
Peter’s Square in the rain, Benedict XVI said the Word of God is Christ
himself and that “no further new public revelations are to be awaited. The
pope recalled how, thanks to Dei Verbum, there has been a veritable
“biblical springâ€ in the Church, which has placed the Word of God â€" and
not
many human words â€" right in the centre of preaching, teaching and community
life..

C.S.Lewis's popularity extends beyond the Borders children's section. This

2001. Multiple books about Lewis debut annually; this year's crop features
Jacobs' biography and Jack's Life (Broadman & Holman) by Lewis' stepson
Douglas Gresham. In 1947, a TIME cover story hailed Lewis as "one of the
most influential spokesmen for Christianity in the English-speaking world."
Now, 58 years later (and 42 after his death, in 1963), he could arguably be
called the hottest theologian of 2005...

Archbishop's column - Br Roger still has a great deal to give

Commissioning signals the start of formal lay ministry
It was a significant and joyous moment when Jackie Jansen, the first
graduate from the lay formation programme, Launch Out, was commissioned by
Archbishop John Dew at St Peter and Paul’s parish church, Lower Hutt. In his
homily Archbishop John acknowledged the four years Jackie has spent in his
formation programme. He also highlighted the impact Jackie has already made
in his short time as a lay minister at Arohata prison. The commissioning
service was led by Brother Kieran Garvey, the senior prison chaplain, and
was attended by several other prison chaplains....

Catholics told to scan the margins for credibility signs
The church needs to listen to the people on its fringes to make itself
credible in today’s world, says one speaker at the recent colloquium to mark
the Palmerston North diocese’s 25th birthday. The four-day colloquium drew
speakers from New Zealand and Australia and asked them to address the issue
of creed and credibility in a critical age. One of the speakers, Jacquie
Lambert, who has worked most recently as a spiritual director, but also as a
critical care nurse, nursing lecturer, polytech chaplain, Benedictine oblate
and writer, told the seminar the church needed to listen to the darkest,
most forgotten corner of its membership, the fringe dwellers, because it was
in danger of losing them....

New diplomat keeps mum on controversial survey
The apostolic nuncio, Archbishop Charles Balvo, says he is unable to comment
on a reported Vatican move to screen prospective seminarians for homosexual
orientation. The publication of the document which purports to have all
seminarians checked to make sure they are not of homosexual orientation, has
stirred up controversy in the United States where all 229 seminaries are
being investigated...

in public roles Sunday. "This is precisely the ever-current message of

something to hide when it becomes inconvenient, but implies coherence and
