Dear 'kiwicatholics',

Sorry to say, once again I didn't manage to get the stories from this weekend's 'NZ CATHOLIC ' onto the Web site before Sunday, but I'll do my best to have them up on Monday and I will post right afterwards to let everyone know.

TV MASS
Prime TV continues to broadcast Sunday Mass at 11.30 am for another five weeks or so. There's a little note about this on the bishops' home page -http://www.catholic.org/newzealand

EDUCATION / FOR YOUNG CATHOLICS
'Faith Alive' is a New Zealand resource Web site for Catholic schools. Its newest feature is devoted to Web resources about the Holy Spirit: http://www.faithcentral.net.nz/inclass/spirit.htm

The latest Edmund Rice Family Newsletter -http://mysite.xtra.co.nz/~edmundnews - reports on last summer's Edmund Rice holiday camp for young children.

PRAYER RESOURCE
There's a new prayer and reflection resource site -http://www.prayingeachday.org from the De La Salle Brothers in the U.K.

FROM THE SECULAR PRESS

Independent Newspapers Ltd (INL), the largest newspaper publisher in New Zealand, has recently expanded its Web site - http://www.inl.co.nz - with a daily selection of stories from their newspapers up and down the country. Taking advantage of this I am introducing a new feature to 'News & Notes' called "From the Secular Press", with links to the full text of stories likely to interest the Catholic community ...

Popular Figure: A tribute to Paddy Egden. -- Obituary
Being born on Saint Patrick's Day to a West Coast Catholic family, the naming of Paddy Egden was almost inevitable. Mr Egden, a popular Christchurch figure, died on May 24, aged 88.

Dealing to the demons
It comes as something of a relief when one of the Catholic Church's unofficial exorcists looks you in the eye and finds that there is no sign of you being possessed by demons. Father John Rae was in Timaru recently, not to perform what he prefers to call deliverances rather than exorcisms, but to conduct healing services.

'THE CHURCH ALIVE' CONFERENCE, HAMILTON 7-9 July 2000 Te Rapa Racecourse, Hamilton
www.catholic.org/newzealand/hamilton/churchalive.htm
Next weekend's national Jubilee conference will examine the past, present and future of the Catholic Church in New Zealand. Key speakers will include Cardinal Williams ("Where have we come from"); Bishop Denis Browne ("Where we are now"); Bishop Pat Dunn ("Where are we going?"); The Anglican Bishop of Waikato, Rt. Rev. David Moon ("Alpha and joint ventures"); Bishop Dolan ("Evangelisation"); John and Tracy Connelly of the John Paul II Bible School in Alberta, Canada ("Renewal and Catholic spirituality"). If you are attending , please keep your 'kiwicatholic' forum in mind and send us a few lines about your impressions.

THE GREAT JUBILEE - NEWS & EVENTS
http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/cathcom/jubilee/news.html
9 July is the 'Jubilee of the Prisons'. In advance of it, Pope John Paul has issued a message of which the general theme is that "prison should not be a corrupting experience, a place of idleness and even vice, but instead a place of redemption." There's a link to the full text on our Jubilee News page.

In the next few days I'll be opening a new section on the page for World Youth Day and the Jubilee of Young People (15-20 August) and I hope this will coincide with a new section on the bishops' Web site 'For Young Catholics'.

Finally, this is likely to be a turbulent week in Rome with all sorts of demonstrations and accusations flying about. Please remember that on our World Catholic News page - http://newzealand/cathcom/news/frnews.html - you can find several links to free Catholic news services, updated daily.

God bless,
Mike Leon
