Catholic Church can mete out. It makes him a lightning rod for
anti-church sentiment, forces him to confront the church's dark past
and its worst miscreants, and means many meetings with victims, often
talking of their abuse for the first time.

Caritas advocates make impact on benefits at annual event
Representatives of New Zealand Catholic groups are among 40 benefit
advocates that have gathered in Auckland to support people living on
benefits at the Mangere Benefit Impact being held at the Mangere
office of Work and Income New Zealand from 5-7 August.

A group of Filipino carpenters recruited to work in Christchurch's
rebuild had no work when they arrived and had to rely on charity to
get by.

When a fire destroyed the wooden St Mary of the Angels church in
Boulcott St in 1918, Wellingtonians opened their wallets to build the
magnificent French gothic church that stands today. Parish priest
Father Barry Scannell hopes that generosity will be repeated this
century to fund a $9.35 million earthquake strengthening bill.

Only 10 years ago members of the congregation at St Benedict's
Catholic church in inner-city Auckland raised about $2 million to
lovingly restore their Victorian red brick church. Now they face a
bill of up to $8 million to do the same again.

Ward Catholics said farewell to their church ahead of its demolition
but look forward to a new beginning, worshipping in St Peter's
Anglican Church. Past and present parishioners of St Peter Chanel
Catholic Church stood shoulder to shoulder with members of Ward
Anglican community at a decommissioning mass celebrated by Father
Aidan Kay yesterday.
