Emma Christophers made a late decision to enter the White Island race. A couple of days before the race on Saturday, the 15-year-old Kavanagh College pupil opted to enter the swimming section. And it is a not an easy decision to make, as swimming out to White Island and back in the chilly sea water is no walk in the park...

Rosmini College sex abuse: Brother William Jackson groped boys during music lessons
An Auckland lawyer and former politician has come out in support of Rosmini sex abuse victim, saying he too was groped by brother William Jackson, a music teacher at the Catholic school in Auckland during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Sacred Heart 125th anniversary 'team effort'
A nervous wait gave way to excitement and a chance to reminisce for past and present pupils and staff of Sacred Heart School, Dunedin. Pupils dressed in colonial-style costume on Friday practised songs ready to welcome about 80 people for the school's three-day, 125th anniversary celebrations.

Papal interviews are now so commonplace that his latest such exchange, with the Italian news agency Adnkronos on Friday, wasn't front-page news even here in Italy. Yet there's much of real interest, beginning with the pope's words on corruption in the Church. In a nutshell, Francis said the problem goes back centuries, that he's doing his best to root it out, that more action is coming soon, but he's "honestly not very optimistic" it will succeed ...
