How do you hug a Pope? If you're from Africa, maybe, or somewhere a little
more demonstrative, you just leap in. But if you're Clare Dooley, 30-year-
old Catholic youth worker from Christchurch, you resist temptation _ though
you do shake hands at least three times...

The sound of New Zealand rolled across World Youth Day late yesterday as
Sydney Cardinal George Pell celebrated a two-hour opening Mass with an
estimated 140,000 pilgrims. With dusk settling over east Darling Harbour, a
group from Auckland's Hato Petera College sang in Maori during communion,
joining the blaze of national cultures, colours and flags that in the past
few days have taken over Australia's biggest city.

The New Zealand Catholic church is confident the Pope's apology for past
sexual abuse by priests, delivered on Saturday, is more than just talk...

Universal apology a start

The focus of the Pope's trip is World Youth Day but an issue that will also
dominate proceeding is the matter of sexual abuse by Catholic priests. The
Pope has said he will apologise to victims of sexual abuse by Catholic
clergy in Australia, just as he did in the United States this year, writes
The Marlborough Express in an editorial.

Former Hamilton resident and Sacred Heart Girls' College student Pat Lythe,
formerly Pat Reid, is to be invested with the highest order the Catholic
Church can give a woman. In September Mrs Lythe will be made an Order of St
Gregory, which makes her a Papal Dame or the equivalent of a secular
knighthood. She was nominated for her layperson services to the Church.
