Pope Francis has appointed Father Michael Gielen from the Catholic Diocese of Hamilton as the new Auxiliary Bishop for Auckland. Ordained as a priest in 1997, Bishop-elect Gielen served parishes in Gisborne, Hamilton and the western Bay of Plenty before becoming Director of Formation at the Holy Cross Seminary in Auckland in 2014, helping to train new priests.

A Canterbury schoolboy is making a stand against plastic packaging, even though it means giving up one of his favourite treats. Dominic Ogilvie, 11, said while he loved sushi, he was prepared to forgo it if it could not be packaged sustainably. He has been a keen member of the St Joseph's School's Enviro group for two years and loves learning about native flora and fauna, and is encouraging his parents to plant native trees in their garden.
