Ella McGuigan has shown that sometimes, something good can come from a deeply traumatic experience. The St Peter's College pupil has won the 2018 Otago Daily Times Secondary Scene Award for Excellence in Writing, for a piece she wrote after her brother had been in a serious car accident.

Palmerston North's town crier has been an endearing and ebullient personality, offering proclamations at public events from graduations to conventions since 2000.
