A woman who shared a birthday with her uncle had the sad task of farewelling him and her aunty at their funeral in Tuakau yesterday. St Andrew's Catholic Church in Tuakau was full for the funerals of Ewen Charles Donaldson, 87, and his wife Dulce Maria, aged in her 60s.

The debate about euthanasia, or more accurately ''physician-assisted suicide' - let's not dress it up by using soft language like ''death with dignity' - has reared its head again. We are told that there should be a legal right for certain persons (specifically doctors) to be able to kill someone when that is what the individual wants. This claim to the right to assisted suicide, which comes out of a deep-seated fear of the dying process, will have farreaching effects on the elderly and the sick.
