Cathedral choir returns (full text)
The Press
Despite losing both its home in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament and music library in the adjoining Music Centre, the CBS choir and orchestra sing on. The choir's director, Don Whelan, singers and musicians are now based in St Mary's Pro-Cathedral in Manchester St where they performed J S Bach's St John's Passion on Good Friday. The CBS choir and orchestra will now present a performance of Mozart's Requiem on Saturday June 25 at 7.30pm in St Mary's. Whelan will conduct with soloists Sue Densem (soprano) and Chris Whelan (baritone). The concert also includes Mozart's Symphony No 29, the solo cantata Exsultate Jubilate and Regina Coeli.

A fund-raising campaign is under way to help a Papamoa girl get to New York for a life-changing operation.
Zahnee Campbell's family is still waiting to hear if their bid for government funding from the Special High Cost Treatment Pool _ money set aside for one-off treatments not otherwise funded by the public health system _ has been successful. Zahnee's school, St Thomas More Catholic School, will hold a mufti day and sausage sizzle next Friday to raise money, Aquinas College has a mufti day in the works, and Jade challenges other schools to do the same.

Digby Ioane's love for getting ink done is nothing to do with trying to look like a member of a heavy metal band or biker club. A funny thing has happened as the story of a recent Vatican crackdown on a legendary monastery in Rome has made its way into the English-language press. I mean that literally -- the story has been turned into a joke, thereby obscuring its real significance. For those with eyes to see, the suppression of the Cistercian abbey at the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, one of the traditional seven major pilgrimage sites in Rome, rates far more than placement in a "news of the weird" column. Instead, it's the latest chapter in what might be called a "Quiet Revolution" under Pope Benedict XVI, referring to a reform in clerical culture beginning in Rome and radiating beyond...
