TELEGRAM FOR THE DEATH OF THE KING OF TONGA

Vatican City, Sept 13, 2006 (VIS) - Benedict XVI sent a telegram of
condolence to King Taufa'ahau Tupou V of Tonga for the death of his father,
King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV who died on Sunday, September 10 at the age of 88
following a long illness. He had been king of Tonga since 1967.

"I was saddened to learn of the death of His Majesty King Taufa'ahau Tupou
IV, your beloved father, and I send my heartfelt condolences to you, the
royal family and all the people of Tonga. Assuring the bereaved of my
prayers and spiritual closeness at this time of national mourning, I commend
the long reigning late king to the loving mercy of Almighty God and invoke
upon the country the divine gifts of consolation and peace. As a pledge of
hope in the Risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I impart my apostolic
blessing."

Archbishop Dew's column: Opening our ears to justice

The universe story, a challenge for the church
Christians need to look beyond the Christian story for ways to address the
issue of depleting oil supplies and climate change which will radically
change the way we live in the next decades. Marist Fr Peter Healy who runs
seminars on ecological spirituality with Sr Noelene Landrigan rsj, says
human history is coming to the end of a phase which some call ‘the petroleum
interval’. In the last 100 years, western economies have driven the whole
agricultural industrial system on oil, so that we are actually eating oil

Responding to the call for ecological conversion
The idea that some four-year-olds in Australia have never seen rain is
behind the creation of a new Catholic agency to focus on environmental
issues across the Tasman. Col Brown of Catholic Earthcare Australia was
keynote speaker at four seminars organised in the Palmerston North Diocese
to consider the Social Justice Week focus on environmental justice....

Archbishop launches synod booklet
Archbishop John Dew will launch the synod booklet, the front cover of which

promulgation mass on 20 September at Sacred Heart Cathedral. He will launch
the booklet for South Island parishes a in St Mary’s Church, Nelson, on 29

Wel-com in winning class
At the recent Australasian Catholic Press Conference awards, Wel-com won the
best feature award for a series of three articles on inter-church marriages
mostly written by Sally and John Faisandier. The judge’s citation said that
the series provided an in-depth insight into an issue faced by many couples
and the church....

CWL conference abuzz with ideas
The Catholic Women’s League will be asking parliament to ban the advertising
of prescription drugs on TV, regulate the advertising of instant finance and
debt rescheduling loans, reprint the booklet Considering an Abortion â€" what
are your options, increase hospice funding, ban the sale of fireworks to the
public, and enhance public transport in urban areas. These six remits were
agreed on at its national conference in Wellington on 20 July....

Peace celebrated in Lower Hutt
Peace Together is the theme of a celebration of peace which uses the image
of people as pieces in a jigsaw in the Hutt later this month. Initiated by
the Inter-Faith Council in the Hutt Valley, the ecumenical initiative
recognises the United Nations International Day of Peace. The council
comprises members of the Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Moslem and
Sikh faith-traditions and meets regularly to deepen appreciation of each
other’s cultures and beliefs....
