New Zealand priests find ways to be with people affected by quake
The seaside town of Kaikoura on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island might have had its road and rail links with the outside world cut off after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake, but its Catholic priest found a way to get into the town to celebrate Sunday Mass and be with his people.

THE 15TH STATION PODCAST

Station XV: Episode 110 — Voting, Governing, Ordaining, Building and Writing
November 15, 2016

The remarkable and unexpected election of Donald Trump highlights this month's episode, with stories about the voting patterns of Catholic and Evangelicals and the hope for shared priorities with the Catholic Church and the President-Elect. Pope Francis's affirmation of the Church's teaching on women's ordination and the news that the Christchurch Cathedral could be fully restored — at the cost of $100 million — also feature on the show. But the big question of the month is "What happened to a New Zealand teddy bear at the Vatican?" Enjoy the show.

** Three take-aways from today's global crop of new cardinals
Pretty much everything a pope does exercises leadership and shapes culture in the Church, whether or not it comes wrapped in a binding magisterial declaration. Today is an excellent illustration of the point, as Pope Francis will create 17 new cardinals in an event called a "consistory," 13 of whom will be eligible to elect his successor.

** As bishops joust, Pope Francis calls new cardinals to spurn polarization
"We live at a time in which polarization and exclusion are burgeoning and considered the only way to resolve conflicts," Francis said on Saturday, as he was elevating 17 new men to the College of Cardinals. "How many situations of uncertainty and suffering are sown by this growing animosity?" he asked, including "between us, within our communities, our priests, our meetings."
