Closed churches to be repaired
Work on repairing closed earthquake-damaged Catholic churches in Pleasant Point and Temuka should begin in the middle of the year. Both churches were closed last July as a result of the damage sustained in the Canterbury earthquakes.

Popular singer, songwriter and recording artist Father Chris Skinner is making a welcome return to Te Aroha. A Catholic priest with a ministry in music, Father Skinner wrote and sang Sons of Gallipoli at the annual Anzac Day service in Turkey as well as the annual service at the National War Memorial in Wellington.

Child abuse inquiry begins in Melbourne
Australia's sweeping investigation into child abuse within organisations ranging from churches to sports clubs and government agencies begins today in Melbourne. Although no plans to take evidence in New Zealand have been announced, it is expected the commission will consider cases in which Catholic priests were shuffled across the Tasman after committing sex crimes against children.

Who Francis may be, based on who Bergoglio was
I spent this week in Argentina in search of insight into Pope Francis from the people who know him best as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the man who was their archbishop for fifteen years. For sure, the first impression here is deep national pride. Locals say there's probably never been a better-attended Holy Week in the history of Argentinian Catholicism than after Francis' election. A Via Crucis procession in Rosario, the country's second city, usually draws 200,000 people, but this time it attracted 350,000; attendance at the cathedral in Buenos Aires was estimated to be two to three times greater than 2012. All across the country, church-goers reported standing-room-only crowds and long lines for confession...
