Catholic priest returning to Phoenix
Bush Telegraph, Tararua
The Catholic community in Tararua is upset to be losing its sole priest, Father Bryan Buenger, who has to leave New Zealand to return to Phoenix, Arizona, due to immigration rules. Under a National government it is likely Father Bryan would have been able to stay as age waivers have been granted previously. But the coalition government with stricter immigration rules has turned down an appeal and Father Bryan has to leave on February 11.

John O'Carroll was not only one of the best known stockmen in North Canterbury, he was one of the last surviving World War II veterans in the district and put in years of community volunteer work. He died on January 15, aged 98.

Retirement for Stratford couple after years of serving their community
The Stratford Press
With a combined total of 80 years of service to their community, Doug and Joanne Robinson are due some well-earned rest in their retirement. In December last year Doug retired from his teaching role at St Joseph's Stratford, where he was also a deputy principal for many years, and Joanne retired from her hospice nursing role. While the couple have started the new year with plans to relax and enjoy time with family and friends, both agree they won't be sitting around for long.

Siblings reunite at 'spiritual home'
Twelve siblings reunited yesterday at the Dunedin property they grew up on to remember a childhood described as "heaven on earth". Now mostly in their 60s and 70s, the dozen surviving Browne siblings gathered for a reunion at the new home on the North Rd property in Normanby yesterday afternoon.

STATION XV

Episode 135 — Expectation, Celebration, Protestation and Cooperation (February 16, 2019)

With the presidents of bishops' conferences from across the world descending on the Vatican next week, the panel looks at the upcoming child protection summit and what we might expect. Pope Francis has returned for the summit after spending five days in Panama for World Youth Day, which attracted hundreds of thousands of people. In the South Pacific, serious concerns have been raised about the treatment of asylum-seekers currently living in Papua New Guinea, while in Fiji, the appointment of Catholic school principals caused a rift between the Church and the government. Thankfully, there's news that religious people are more likely to be happy, so Anna, James and Gavin can at least rejoice in that. Enjoy the show.

CRUX - Edited by John L. Allen Jr. and Inés San Martin

** McCarrick becomes most senior cleric to be defrocked over abuse scandals
In a widely expected yet still dramatic move, the Vatican announced Saturday that Pope Francis has approved the removal of ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick from the clerical state, colloquially known as "laicization" or "defrocking." It's the most severe penalty in Church law for a clergyman, and the 88-year-old McCarrick becomes the most senior cleric to suffer it for crimes related to the clerical sexual abuse scandals...

** Editor of Vatican women's magazine aims to shatter silence on abused nuns
The March edition of "Women, Church, World" _ the monthly magazine of the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano _ is denouncing how nuns are treated like virtual slaves by cardinals and bishops, forced to cook, clean and tend to their needs for next to no pay...
