It may not be an ancient cathedral, but St Joseph's church in Waitara could soon have similar status. The Nelson St building is being considered by New Plymouth District Council for addition to the district plan as a category A historic building, meaning it will have the highest possible protection. Divine intervention (photo)

He was the kind of man you'd pass in the street without a second glance a good, solid, salt-of-the-earth type who'd always been able to support his family with his skills. Now he sits slumped in a chair in a church office, looking down at his clenched workingman's hands. The events of the last few weeks have stripped him of pride.

One step from heaven
New Zealand Herald — H003 — 16 May 2009
There aren't too many developers who can say the successful sale of their latest luxurious clifftop creation features in the prayers of 20 nuns. Award-winning builder-developers Nigel and Jackie Benton built this palatial new masonry home with panoramic sea views on land subdivided off the grounds of the neighbouring Catholic rest home. The Marian Rest Home is a small facility within spacious grounds, catering for elderly Catholic nuns and laywomen.
