LENT 2019

The Caritas Lenten Reflection Programme

Each year the Lent Appeal is run by Caritas on behalf of New Zealand's Catholic Bishops to support its work of charity and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable around the world, including in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Lent 2019 theme – "Living Our Lives with Love" – is taken from "Gaudete et Exsultate – Rejoice and Exult" by Pope Francis. The key themes are new beginnings, patience, compassion, mercy and love.

Resources and the Lenten Reflection Programmes are prepared each year for parishes, schools, small groups and the wider community. Links to the resources are available on the linked page.

Ongoing issues with the inquiry into state care risk its very survival
On Sunday, Stuff revealed that the chair of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and Care in Faith-Based Institutions, Sir Anand Satyanand, had twice offered to tender his resignation to Internal Affairs Minister Tracey Martin. Satyanand was already the head of the inquiry. When it looked like the terms would change to include faith-based care – a measure he advocated for – he alerted Martin to a perceived conflict of interest. The former Governor General told Martin he is a devoted Catholic, who attended a Catholic school and has a long history with the Catholic community...

The change maker: A conversation with Cardinal John Dew about the future of the Catholic Church
A wooden cross made from a lifeboat wrecked on rocks off the Italian island of Lampedusa hangs on Cardinal John Dew's office wall. Sitting in his office across the street from Parliament, Dew, the Catholic Archbishop of Wellington, holds the cross in his hands. In February, he sent out two memos to the Wellington Archdiocese saying that the status quo had to change. Too much time was being spent looking inwards, and not enough time spent serving the poor...

Before anti-trafficking fight was fashionable, German nun was in the streets
Sister Lea Ackermann grew up in Klarenthal, Germany, and after working as a banker in both Germany and Paris decided "to have a whole life dealing with money was not very interesting." Ackermann would go on to become a global crusader in the fight against prostitution...

Rumors of death of Anglican/Catholic ties a decade ago greatly exaggerated
Anyone looking at the Vatican's official news bulletin on Tuesday would have seen two items: A declaration detailing a retreat being hosted this week by Pope Francis and Archbishop Justin Welby of Canterbury for South Sudan's political leadership, and an updated set of norms for "personal ordinariates", meaning structures for former Anglicans to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. At first glance, the only thing the two developments may seem to have in common with one another is the word "Anglican." In reality, there's a deeper bond between the two storylines...
